About this listen

Are you a nursing student who has started precepting in a hospital and thought, “Why didn’t I get taught this in nursing school?” Look no further!

As a nurse with more than 15 years of experience, I often precept nursing students, train new grads, or orient new nurses. Over and over, I hear the statement from them, “No one ever taught me that!” I get it. School is overwhelming, and the focus is on the basics.

This book addresses the gaps between the book world and the real world, where the work actually is. This audiobook is jam-packed with all sorts of lessons you will never learn in school. These real-world tips and tricks will shorten the learning curve all new grads go through.

Contained here are funny nursing stories to elaborate on several major nursing themes like superstitions, work-wives, night shift, gallows humor, teamwork, surveyors, and potlucks. This book cuts through generalities to the heart of what real nursing is like: the good, the bad, and the funny.

In this book you will discover:

  • How to speak "Nurse".
  • The ultimate nursing superpower.
  • What the biggest myth in nursing is.
  • What not to talk about with coworkers.

If you are in nursing school, if you’re a new nurse, or if you just want to be one someday, this book will teach you what it's really like. Scroll up and click the "Buy Now" button and get ready for a hilarious PRN dose of some honest nursing reality.

Insightful and Helpful

This audiobook is an absolute gem! It has the real-life experience that you simply cannot get and absorb through theory and lessons taught in texts. This is it, real life as a nurse in a variety of shifts and different scenarios. It gives you an insider perspective on what to expect in real-world hospital/nursing situations and what you might encounter ( probably will encounter) in your work relationship dynamics.. So interesting!

Beyond the Classroom

For professionals and nursing students, this audiobook is an invaluable source of advice. It is a vital tool for anyone trying to close the knowledge gap between theory and the complex reality of the nursing profession because of Dittman's straightforward wisdom, kind delivery, and useful ideas. It is a mentorship that goes with nurses on their path to competency, resiliency, and compassionate care—it is more than just a guide. I'll rate this book 5 out of 5 for sure.

A wealth of valuable nursing experience!

What I like about "What they do not teach you in nursing school" by Kristine Dittman, is that the author shares a wealth of experience that would make any new nurse feel more comfortable on the work room floor. You learn about common superstitions, nursing jargon (my favorite "failure to fly") and the true value of food to a nurse. Discover why you should trust your intuition, angels are real, and how your family and friends may now see you as Marcus Welby MD. This is a fantastic dose of reality that can make you fit in faster and be more professional as you begin your nursing career.

True and relatable

Really short on the topics. Feels like it is more for just going into the medical field, not specifically nursing.

Entertaining and educational!

Great book to listen to before going from school into your nursing profession, especially if choosing a unit like ED or ICU! I have enjoyed being a nurse for 16 years and I even picked up a few new educational pearls from this book!

My advice for any new nurse is to take any learning opportunity offered to you, if you ever become bored, explore different departments in the hospital for new challenges! Find your passion… as a nurse, each day at work presents an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of others!

Nurses are Heaven Sent

Wow. Totally enjoyed listening to that, as someone who also works in Healthcare for more that 2 decades (MLS) i can totally relate to some of the superstitions that was mentioned. Health workers specially our nurses are special in more ways that you can imagine, not everybody can be a Health worker it takes a special kind of person to work in this past paced, high intensity and crazy world that we learned to love, It is also true what the author said about night shifter, (i work night shift also) you form a bond stickier that a super glue with your shift husband/wife. This audiobook is a gem not only for nurses but for everyone in healthcare as well. Highly recommended it. This will be a nice gift if you have a nurse in your family or a friend. Good job !!!

Taking a Look Behind the {Privacy} Curtain

With great narration and good humor, Kristine gives us a glimpse behind the scenes of a nursing professional's career.  The stories and anecdotes she shares takes us to the hospital halls where eccentricities sometimes reign alongside professionalism, and to the hospital rooms where individuals and their challenges bring tears to our eyes.

Although not a nurse, I have worked in a major metro hospital as a non-clinical staff member and I appreciate how I can relate to a few of the things covered in this book (the role-specific acronyms are especially hilarious!).

Kristine's observations and insights make this a charming read--I didn't want it to end!

Valuable Insights

Drawing from more than 15 years of nursing experience, the book addresses the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in school and the practical aspects of nursing in real-world settings. Highly recommend it to nursing students and new graduates entering the healthcare industry.

Really enjoyed this

My mom was a nurse ... listening to this reminded me of her, and her nursing school days too when I was a kid. The audiobook experience landed in a pretty nostalgic way. The personality of the author comes through and is very likable. This is a great, quick listen, and I expect it'll be encouraging and helpful for nursing students!
