About this listen

The shocking first true account from one of the young girls who lived through and survived the Rotherham sex abuse scandal.

In the summer of 2014, the Rotherham sex abuse scandal sent shockwaves through the nation. A report revealed that, since the 1990s, up to 1,400 young girls in the town had been regularly abused by sex gangs, predominantly comprised of Pakistani men. As the media descended on the small Yorkshire town, Sarah Wilson watched with horror and relief as her voice was finally heard after years of abuse.

Sarah was just eleven years old when she was befriended by a group of older men. Bullied at school, naive and vulnerable, the gifts and attention they lavished on her were what she craved, she just wanted to belong. But soon she was hooked on alcohol and drugs, and then they owned her. She was just twelve years old when she was bundled into a car by a man in his thirties and forced to have sex with him. Soon, the gang were driving her to places where she was raped by scores of men.

Falling through the system, from social services to school, no-one was able to help her. She ‘escaped’ when she became too old for the men at nearly sixteen.

Finally a victim of the Rotherham scandal tells her story in the hope that other young girls will not fall prey to the same evil that she endured.

Good story but author still under their spell

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes

What did you like best about this story?

She really caught what it is like to be an adolescent just wanting to fit in, hang out and have friends.

Have you listened to any of Chloe Massey’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. Really enjoyed her performance

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I think the author is still under their spell, she goes on to get involved with another one after everything that happened? Surprise, surprise she is now on her own again. Don't want to put in any spoilers but can say that the man she was with towards the end and how that relationship left her, was anyone reading/listening surprised?

Any additional comments?

Although the author stated over and over that she hated her and her family's stories being fodder for racists, her story more then any other I have read shows there is complete disharmony between this particular ideology and the Western world. The contempt that everyone of them showed this author and her family is truly alarming and don't get me started on the local police and social workers. This poor child was failed on every level and I am glad I have a rifle to keep my child from the same fate. I'm sure if her mother had one this child would have been spared a lot of pain. Also it is more proof that we can never truly trust government officials to take care of us. In fact, don't expect anything from them at all.

Violated

I loved the narrarators voice. The story itself was hard to read, not because I did not like it, but because Sarah, her family and all the other girls/families involved went through so much. I definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone. God bless

The truth

She was so brave to write about what happened to her. Such a tragically horrific experience for all those young children.

Great book

The book was great. It was so horrible the things the author went through but I am glad she spoke out about her story and I was so sorry to hear about her sister.

It’s a bigger issue today

This is all too common, and it will be a bigger issue in the US in the coming years.

Well written

An awful story written to take it slowly and understand the several aspects happening at once. Glad about the outcome, bless all of those young girls 🙏

Horror Story and shocking to think this happened in modern day Britain.

This was not a story I had heard about in Australia although I had heard the case of the first white honour killing so doubly shocking that such horror was experienced by this one family.

The story was personal, sensitive and without prejudice that in itself highlights the remarkable nature and strength of this survivor and her mum and sister.

The narrator did a fantastic job of telling this true event through the eyes of the author who had to experience this awful abuse at such a young age.

A troubling story from a brave voice- Spoiler

It is appalling what people will do to observe political correctness. Vulnerable children were left to fend off pedophiles because people in power didn't want to chance offending someone. The weakest, most deserving of protection should never be sacrificed for fear of damage to one's own career... Even when shown proof of the atrocities being done to the children at the hands of the British Pakistanis, the people in position to do something about it STILL tucked their heads and denied all. Awful, just awful.
Thankfully there are people listening now, people that care and that are striving to bring it to an end. Unfortunately, although awareness has grown, the pedophiles are getting more and more creative and harder to catch.
As if the child abuse wasn't horrible enough, the family also suffered an "honor killing". This is a most RIDICULOUS custom usually used by middle eastern Islamic males to kill a female family member they feel have disgraced them. For instance, this CRIME is used by fathers, brothers, uncles, etc., for such embarrassing things as when a female family member is raped That's right, they don't kill the perpetrator, they kill the VICTIM! Disgusting that this horrific act STILL GOES ON today!!!
God bless the writer and her family for remaining strong at heart, they have clearly suffered so much. God Bless her for not turning her hurt into hatred of all British Pakistani men, it would have been so very easy for her to do.
