Named after the lager that christened her at birth, Stella's life is characterised instability and neglect. Her teenage mother abandons her in the first few weeks of her life, and left in the 'care' of her father, she ends up lying deserted in a house with no food, no water, no clothes and no warmth.
She eventually lands in the care of foster carer Louise, who is determined to change her life for the better. Things seem to be going well - but when Stella has a startling response to having her photo taken, it becomes clear the scars of her abuse run deeper than anyone could have ever guessed.

I would love to meet Louise Allen.. as a parent of a son with special needs, she has such fabulous analysis of children's needs and thoughts and makes me think.. before I do ...thinking of behavior as a way of communication had helped me tremendously!

Great read
I truly enjoyed this story. And the ending. Many times you are left wondering but I felt like we know that Stella will be fine and overcome all her short comings

Heartbreaking story
The things that these innocent children go through makes me so furious. There is a special place in hell for child abusers and a special place in heaven for those that rescue them.

Stella
This was a really good book and hits the mark with the problems with our government child protection system. Everyone should read this book to better understand that just being a parent does not mean that you should have that child in your possession and under your care.

Heartwarming while educational
This book presents an inside view of the foster system and the children who find themselves a part of it. The story takes us along on a journey of revelation into the horrors a child has endured, and the love and understanding of her foster family. It doesn’t sugar coat the challenges, and it reveals the shortcomings of the system designed to protect the children it serves. I felt as though I learned so much, and in a way that thoroughly engaged me. I will be forever changed in my attitude towards the people who love and guide a damaged child through the challenges they face, into a brighter future.

Sad yet uplifting
As a survivor of abuse, this story brought home how fortunate I was that this isn’t my story. Thank goodness for foster parents who care and how sad that the system fails all the time.

Beautifully told
Cried my eyes out at the end. Our stories are very similar and this gave me hope for the children out there who feel alone.
