Acerca de esta escucha

This Is Where We Talk Things Out by Caitlin Marceau, author of Palimpsest: A Collection of Contemporary Horror, follows the gut-wrenching journey of Miller and her estranged mother Sylvie, who have always had a tense relationship.

After Miller's father dies, she agrees to a girls' vacation away from the city to reconnect with the only family she has left. Although she’s eager to make things work, Miller can’t help but worry that her mother is seeing their countryside retreat as a fun weekend getaway instead of what it really is: a last-ditch effort to repair their relationship.

Unfortunately, that quickly becomes the least of Miller’s problems.

Sylvie's trapped in the past, and if Miller's not careful, she will be too. A cross between Stephen King's Misery and Stephanie Wrobel's Darling Rose Gold, This Is Where We Talk Things Out explores the horror of familial trauma, mother-daughter relationships, and what happens when we don't let go.

It’s very dark and oddly familiar while still being fresh. It’s foreboding from the jump and even a touch relatable.

If you liked Beau Is Afraid, this book hits a similar vibe

This was truly one of the scariest books I’ve ever read and I read a ton of horror. It’s very Misery-esque

A slow burn within a horror novella is a difficult task. Caitlin Marceau pulls it off with ease and then some with her short story, This is where we talk things out. Subtle terror builds upon itself until an inescapable monster is created. While reading, I literally said out loud to myself, “Wow, that’s good writing.” This book is an award winner for a reason.

A perfect example of from bad to worse.

***

A story of a woman trying to reconnect with her estranged mother. Going on a weekend trip to reconcile the relationship. Each step of the way, more hints are dropped of the pure insanity of the mother. Small things at first then gradually become terrifying to say the least. Being held hostage by an insane person in the middle of a snow storm in a cabin miles away from the love of her life.

This book is very well written and allows the reader to feel the tension, frustration and fear.

Caitlin Marceau weaves an intricate story in This is Where We Talk Things Out, despite its short length. In a remote cabin, small oddities start pile up, as does the snow outside. I really enjoyed the way the tension built throughout the story, beginning with small micro-aggressions and snide comments early on, until it reaches a frenzied crescendo of insanity and violence.

A Nightmare Scenario

This is one hell of a trauma ride. If you have ever known someone as severely narcissistic as the one character, you'll appreciate the accuracy and intent with the dialogue, the passive aggression, the meticulous planning by this particular character. This book is disturbing and leaves you feeling emotionally torn. I believe I am going to have to get a signed copy of this book. Kudos to the author and narrator. I still feel cold. Thank you for that.

Extremely Affective

The voice actor was so amazing. Book was chilling and fast paced. Mad me mad in all the right ways.

Voice actor is amazing. Books good too.

I liked the secluded feeling the story gave and the eerie atmosphere of the cabin. You know something is not right as soon as they arrive and slowly start to figure out what that is. The narrator did a great job switching between the two main characters and you could really tell the difference in their mindsets by the way she acted out each of them.

Misery-ish
