About this listen

A husband and wife brought together by magic strive to stop a war of the worlds in an epic adventure of hope, sorcery, and secrets by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler.

What humankind feared the most has come to pass: the Awakening of the Aesir, an ancient race who rose with an implacable vengeance to wage war on mortals through bombardments and plague. Two people gifted with magic and ingenuity strive to stop them.

Professor Robinson Hawksley, an elocutionist in the Invisible College, prepares to exhibit his invention to the world. Using sound to defeat the enemy could change the course of the war. It’s invaluable to the military. Even more so to a conniving rival who’ll do anything to prove its patent as her own. An extraordinary obstacle could stand in the way: Robinson’s new wife, McKenna, robbed of her hearing by an Aesir scourge, is otherwise blessed with mysterious powers she’s only beginning to comprehend. She’s also harboring a secret that could get her killed.

As a very human war escalates inside the Invisible College, a supernatural one with the Aesir rages outside. But are love and sorcery enough for Robinson and McKenna to conquer both?

Great story, loved those almost historical references, positive portrayal of the hearing impaired, characters that are persistent in their goals and are rewarded because of their adherence to a honorable moral code

Novel plot, sensitivity to and positive portrayal of the hearing impaired

Robinson and McKenna have so many trials ahead. They are trying to make something out of his inventions. There was a big show for all the magicians to see in his invention was purposely messed with it. Fortunately he was still able to fix it and lots of people ordered it. But the pressure is on because they believe McKenna has the Aesir’s Princess in her!

The Danger Increases

The Invisible College, The Violence of Sound, kept me reading late into the night. Insights into some of the storyline mysteries, as well as new or renewed challenges and complications for the characters were revealed.

The writing flows well, as always, and is a pleasure to read. My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer. I want to know what happens!

Good Storyline and Character Developments

Jeff Wheeler is a masterful storyteller and I'm amazed, after reading and listening to many of his other books, at the depths of his imagination. I love that I have absolutely no idea where and when the plot twists and turns are coming. I can't wait for the next installment of this series.

Very Interesting

Jeff Wheeler weaves another masterful tale in the continuation of this engaging tale! The characters and storyline draw you in and keep you riveting and waiting to find out what happens next. The world Wheeler has created and it's system of magic feels original, yet familiar and believable. A worthy 2nd book in the series which is well worth the read! And the narration by Kate Rudd is fantastic as always!

Another amazing continuation to an Engaging tale!

I read the book first and I can say that the story comes more alive with the narration of Ms Rudd.

The two main characters are a young married couple that are gifted with magic. Robinson Foster Hawksley and McKenna Aurora Hawksley (he takes her last name so she can get credit for the invention) keep working together with the purpose to stop a war between the Aesir (immortals) and the Mortals by using sound. Erlking rules the Aesir who's honor is bound to the truth while the Mortals use any means to archive their goal like duplicity and conniving. It reminded me of how's is nowadays 😔 even though to me the time in the story is the19th century.

General Colsterworth frequently participates in the narrative even with all the duties he has at the Gresham College in Bishopsgate and continues to pursue McKenna because he's sure she is semblance. His superior Master Drusselmehr starts harassing him because of all the things he has done.

It seems that everyone has conspired against Robinson so he won't be able to present his invention at the exhibit. And with all disputes inside the Invisible College it complicates things.

This book has a cliffhanger but I recommend it while you have book 1 fresh in your mind. I don't always remember the prior book and Mr Wheeler made me very happy when he wrote snippets of things that happened in book 1. I don't know where he get some of the words so I had to look them up to find out there are not in the dictionary.

So much intrigue and mystery you won't be able to stop listening.

I counted down the days for the release of this sequel and was not disappointed! I read it in 1 sitting and wish it was September so we could find out what happens next. The characters are compelling, the story picks up where you left off, and the writing is simply beautiful. Can’t wait for the finale!

Just as good as the first!
