About this listen

From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Kingfountain Series comes the first novel in a bold and richly imagined world.

Theirs is a world of opposites. The privileged live in sky manors held aloft by a secretive magic known only as the Mysteries. Below, the earthbound poor are forced into factory work to maintain the engine of commerce. Only the wealthy can afford to learn the Mysteries, and they use their knowledge to further lock their hold on society.

Cettie Pratt is a waif doomed to the world below, until an admiral attempts to adopt her. But in her new home in the clouds, not everyone treats her as one of the family.

Sera Fitzempress is a princess born into power. She yearns to meet the orphan girl she has heard so much about, but her father deems the girl unworthy of his daughter’s curiosity.

Neither girl feels that she belongs. Each seeks to break free of imposed rules. Now, as Cettie dreams of living above and as Sera is drawn to the world below, they will follow the paths of their own choosing.

But both girls will be needed for the coming storm that threatens to overturn both their worlds.

a very good fantasy novel

I really loved this. the setting was robust and well thought out, the characters well written and interesting and I love how magic was presented as technology. I also usually find one narrative lacking when there is a swap from one narrative to the other and while I preferred Setties story over Sera's they were both good narratives and I found the swapping to be at natural intervals. I really like Jeff Wheeler as an author and will definitely be back for more.

My only regret

My only regret is that the next book in the series will not be out until August! Wonderful characters, wonderfully brought to life by Kate Rudd’s performance.

Moderate Pace

It was a good story and I found the descriptions of the world of Storm Glass very intriguing. The only thing that got me rubbed the wrong way was the drawn out rising action between Cettie and Mrs. Pullman. Atlas this is a book and it is final, it was a good story nonetheless.

An absolute must listen!

I initially downloaded this book because for some reason it was priced at $0.00. But I'm so glad I did, because the story was absolutely incredible. The pacing was perfect. Perspectives changed at just the right moment to create dramatic suspense, yet somehow add to building momentum that will have you glued to the pages (or your headphones, in the case of the audiobook!)

At first I thought that the narrator was over enunciating, but either she got better, or I became so wrapped up in the story that by the end it didn't matter. At this point, Kate Rudd has helped to form vivid impressions of each of the characters in my mind, and I can't wait to begin listening to the next installment.
