About this listen

This program is read by the author.

The instant New York Times and USA Today best seller

From the number-one best-selling author of Too Much and Never Enough: A diagnosis of America's national trauma, and a way to heal.

The Reckoning will examine America’s national trauma, rooted in our history but dramatically exacerbated by the impact of current events and the Trump administration’s corrupt and immoral policies. Our failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasize. Whether it manifests itself in rising levels of rage and hatred, or hopelessness and apathy, the stress of living in a country we no longer recognize has affected all of us. America is suffering from PTSD - a new leader alone cannot fix us.

An enormous amount of healing must be done to rebuild our faith in leadership, and our hope for this nation. It starts with The Reckoning.

I love it when a book makes me feel stupid!

If only every American would read this. I thought I had been effective in my lifelong surveillance of history. However, the factual history and context sewn together by Mary Trump, with such extraordinary insight make this book unputdownable. Weaving through the the historical events that have shaped or nation in so many ways, Mary's knowledge of the many types of trauma and their impact on individuals, groups and generations makes this book rich and informative in , not only how we deal with the past, but how we might move forward to a better future, especially under the shadow of the pandemic. Her discussion regarding white privilege is the most coherent and realistic I have read to date. Our democracy is fragile. It will indeed require a reckoning.

A most poignant and timely work...

I said I would read no further books about Donald Trump, but OMG this was NOT that! This book was an AMERICAN HISTORY, unvarnished like that which we might typically encounter in the educational systems of this nation... It outlines with clarity, the pernicious path that led to her uncle's presidency and beyond, as well as a framework for healing and restoration! The book was obviously well researched, exquisitely written and excellently narrated... it was far too compelling to put down once I got started. I generally am always reading 2 books at a time, but this one one of the best I have consumed in quite some time.

Thank you, Dr. Trump!

Among the most important books of our time

This is important, it is a comprehensive overview of what it means to be a decent, clear-eyed American. It is thoughtful, it is unflinchingly painful, it is loving, it is the embodiment of patriotism. Would that we all reckon as is described. Read this. Study this. Gift this to your friends and family.

Making sense of the nonsense

This reading is deeply insightful around the sorrow rage and heartache we are experiencing in the world as we emerge from 2020 and face the ongoing trauma of the pandemic, the fight for justice, voting rights, and the end of the forever war.

An excellent read

The author and her research and the details provided a great understanding of a better path forward. I learned a great deal about PTSD. I know what she’s put on the line to detail these truths.

Well written and well read.

engaging and informative

I loved this book. this is a book about American history as much as it is also a book about American psyche. I love how she goes back into widely untaught history and addresses the nation's trauma as a psychologist. she outlines atrocities and addresses the psychological impact those have had, much of which your average person does not recognize. she brings to light the systematic problem that has not been properly addressed.
would read it again and again

This is an eye-opening book and a must read/listen.

Mary Trump does a brilliant job of explaining the history of the USA from its inception through slavery up to the present and how the inherit racism shaped politics and society throughout the years up to and including present. She also offers at least one solution, if American is ready to take a good, honest look into the wound.
