About this listen

Samuel Rutherford, born in the early 1600s, faced many hardships throughout his personal and spiritual life. Despite the criticism of his faith, imprisonment for advocacy of the church, and his exile from his beloved hometown, Rutherford was still able to inspire the people of Scotland with his preaching. Rutherford is still an inspiration in the world of Christianity today through the letters he wrote, some of which can be found in The Loveliness of Christ.

This book has been a great comfort to me in my walk with Jesus. Simon Vance evens has a Scottish accent when he reads, adding to the experience.

What a beautiful book full of quotes and letters that spur on the soul toward a sanctified perspective, life and all its joys and sorrows seen through the lens of our Saviour’s finished work. It required constant focus but it was well rewarded.

the "Heavenly Doctor." I will listen (and read) again and again, for I could not face a season in this life that something in here does not speak to. And speak well to. And I really enjoyed Simon Vance (always do!) and his Scottish accent. Thanks!

This is why S.R. was called

This is so good! I always wanted to hear the letters read with the appropriate accent and pronunciation. The brief definitions of obscure words are also helpful.

This is a treasure to me, but it is short. I wish the whole of "The Letters" was available on Audible. (and I wait for "Fair Sunshine," by Jock Purves, who first introduced me to the Covenanters.)

Samuel Rutherford clears our clouded view and helps us see our Redeemer and our life with eternity's eyes. He is a pastor to us today, across oceans and centuries.

Note: There are comforting words here written to mothers he knew who had lost children.

Excerpts from one of the best of all books!

Rutherford has deep insight into spiritual reality. He understands the struggles and temptations that the human soul faces, and with wise pastoral insight he calls forth new strength and fresh endurance for those who have grown weary in the battle.

Beautiful encouragement

This is a beautiful little booklet. I thoroughly enjoyed every word of it. Plus, Simon Vance is the best préformer on audiobook I can think it f.
