First published in 1867, Unspoken Sermons Series I, II, and III is a series of sermons by George MacDonald, a Scottish author, poet, and Christian minister. He was a pioneering figure in the field of modern fantasy literature and the mentor of fellow writer Lewis Carroll.
MacDonald's theology, though sprinkled liberally throughout his reasonably significant number of books, is perhaps nowhere more noticeable than in Unspoken Sermons. These sermons, though by no means among the most popular of MacDonald's work, have had a theological influence from their first impression. That influence is presumably most notable in C.S. Lewis who called MacDonald "my master" and of Unspoken Sermons said, "My own debt to this book is almost as great as one man can owe to another."

Everything about the gospel message leads to the cross, and proceeds from the cross. In fact, within the narrative of Scripture, the crucifixion of Jesus is literally the crux of the story—the axis upon which the biblical story turns. But it would be a mistake to think we could sum up the significance of the crucifixion in a tidy sentence or two. That kind of thinking only insulates us from the magnificence of what God has done. In our ongoing quest to make meaning of the cross, we need to recognize that this conversation will never conclude-that there is always something more to be said.

The resurrection from death is a strong component of the Christian faith, which the Nicene Creed, affirms stating: "We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come." The early Christian writers Irenaeus and Justin Martyr, in the second century, wrote against the widespread idea of their time that only the soul survived. In like manner, we have this later writing of St. Gregory of Nyssa (335-395 AD) which clearly articulates the position that a person is both soul and body and that Christ has promised to raise them both.

Very deep thoughts

The antidote to 'orthdox' heresy
MacDonald offers a convincing Biblically-based and logically sound rebutable of many of the heresies that have crept into 'orthodox' Christianity. It contains powerful explanations of why eternal conscious torment, substitutionary atonement, and imputed righteousness, to name just a few of the sacred cows that he slaughters in this masterpiece, are truly 'doctrines of demons'. I was especially impacted to hear his scholarly treatment of the 'spirit of adoption' mistranslation and what that means to the heart of a child.
This is essential listening to any serious follower of Christ. The narration and presentation is exceptionally well done.

The author's concepts are worth five stars.
The narrator's weird voice when reading other people's lines are worth one star.
Justice calls for a one star rating here, but mercy delivers a three star rating overall.

Horrible narration
One of my favorite books ever. Almost unlistenable because of the narrator. So distracting and when speaking in the second person the voices he uses are laughable. You can find an audible recording available of the first part of this book with qualified narration.
