About this listen
An unforgettable novel inspired by actual historical events that will forever haunt the small settlement of Silver Lake after experiencing one of Oregon's deadliest tragedies ever.
Eighteen-year-old Pearl Hardisty discovers the small town of Silver Lake in Eastern Oregon has more to offer than dry sage brush, old farmhouses, and unbearable freezing cold winters when she met Frank Bunyard. The kindhearted, handsome cowboy made her glad she decided to move with her family after all. Through stories Frank shares with her, she learns about friendship, survival, and an unforgettable story of privation and loss from a small band of Modoc Indians who were left behind after the Modoc war.
When the tightly knit community of Silver Lake experiences its own tragedy on Christmas Eve in 1894, they learn just how fragile life really is and how important it is to lean on one another and open their hearts and homes to those they once tried to destroy.

As the United States wrestles with its besetting sin—slavery—abolitionist John Brown is growing tired of talk. He takes actions that will propel the nation toward civil war and thrust three courageous women into history: Wealthy Brown, married to John Brown's oldest son; Annie Brown, John Brown's daughter; Mary Brown, who never expected to be the wife of John Brown, much less the wife of a martyr. Spanning three decades, John Brown's Women is a tale of love and sacrifice, and of the ongoing struggle for America to achieve its promise of liberty and justice for all.

But Heather would never consider doing anything like that. That is, until her longtime boyfriend dumps her, she finds herself failing anatomy, and her world starts to crumble.

Historical fiction is my favorite genre!
I have carried this book around for 6 months and didn't crack it open as I am so busy with grant writing, etc. When the book came out out on audible, I was thrilled. I "read" it over the weekend while gardening, driving, carrying out household chores. This is a wonderful story that is actually rooted in a significant Oregon historical event in the 1850s. This would be a great story for a family to read together to study Oregon and the history thereof. The reader did a great job of Irish and German (as many of the settlers were....many don't know that!) and just an enjoyable story all the way around. While there was tragedy and loss, there was also hope and opportunity. Velada! Keep writing! With all of the darkness in our world today, it is nice to go back to the early pioneers and life on the farm/ranch. This was a great escape and has piqued my interest in the pioneer genre and early American life and the challenges and daily vicissitudes. I recommend!
