About this listen

Cutting-edge science. Bloodthirsty aliens. Can this band of nerdy scientists save the multiverse one dimension at a time?

Brilliant physicist Zeke Travers is on the brink of a scientific breakthrough...and a nervous breakdown. So after the beta test of his interdimensional drive goes off without a hitch, he breathes a sigh of relief. But when an alien warship materializes out of nowhere with guns blazing, Zeke and his team must risk using their invention to jump to a parallel universe.

Uncertain how to return to their native continuum, Zeke’s nerd squad must blind-hop across the omniverse from high-tech galaxies to magic-powered medieval planets. Hunted by ridiculously persistent and savage attackers, Zeke suspects the pursuers are only puppets of a far more shadowy evil. And with every roll of the interstellar dice, he fears they’re falling deeper into its sinister clutches.

Can Zeke uncover the dark force behind the attacks in time to save his crew and avoid interdimensional mayhem?

The Heisenberg Corollary is the first book in the hilarious Slagmaster Cycles, a science fiction fantasy mash-up series with an attitude. If you like quirky characters, non-stop action, and geeky pop-culture references, then you’ll love C. H. Duryea’s snarky, laugh-out-loud pause-resister. Buy The Heisenberg Corollary today to boldly go where no geek has gone before!

An exciting new universe

Duryea’s novel has sharp writing, snappy dialogue, and scientist-adventurer characters that are relatable, even in his distant universe. The narrative weaves action, suspense, and humor into an intriguing and fun story, and narrator William Hahn truly brings it to life. Highly recommended!

There's potential for this series

I have mixed thoughts about this story. I'll try and get them in some kind of order. First, let's talk about the narrator. He did a really good job infusing the story with some excitement and feeling. He was easy to understand and did a good job with accents and voices. This is the first audiobook I've listened to with sound effects. At times it enhanced the experience. Other times it felt awkward, but overall, the narrator did well.

Now, on to the story itself. This is where I really have mixed thoughts. There is a lot of potential here. I love the idea of multiverses. Our group of heroes are thrust into navigating these multiverses before fully understanding the device they've built for that purpose and the effects of doing so. The story is full of action and adventure.

I think where things fell short for me was I didn't feel emotionally connected to the characters, but I can't put my finger on why. There were times the dialogue felt natural, and others when the technical mumbo jumbo felt like the author trying to sound smart. There were simpler ways to describe things and still be good science fiction. I'm also not a big fantasy reader and a lot of this first book was set in a medieval age world. Perhaps it's simply that I'm not a RPG player. The story has lots of RPG references and unfolds like those games. My guess is gamers will love this story.

All in all, I give the story a 3.5 and a PG rating.

1-5 scale and what it means:
1: I couldn’t even finish it / just plain bad
2: I hope I didn’t pay for this / disappointing
3: I didn’t hate it, but it was still missing something / forgettable but inoffensive
3.5: On the line between good and ok / like, not love
4: Solid mind candy / worth reading
4.5: So very close to perfection! / must read
5: I could not put it down and I’m still thinking about it! / a true treasure

Movie Ratings in relation to my review:
Clean--Hallmark movies, some kissing, no nudity, no sex on or off "screen"
PG--Occasional us of mild swear words. Some innuendo but nothing kids don't hear every day, sex is all closed door
PG-13--some language (more use of swear words not related to sex), more talk about sex, heavy petting, removal of clothing on screen, but sex is closed door.
PG-14—somewhere between PG-13 and R. Not erotica, but at least a paragraph of on-screen sex
R--swearing (F-bomb, on “screen” sex, sometimes feels like the whole story is about the sex and not the relationship or some other plot, but not always

Humorous sci-fi

This was a very enjoyable listen. I enjoyed the author's off-beat sense of humour. Good story line, interesting characters and plenty happening to keep things interesting! I'd suggest this to anyone who enjoys sci-fi and has a quirky sense of humour.

Can’t wait for more!

I simply loved this book! It reminded me of some of the better old radio shows. The reading clearly denoted which character was speaking and the characters were fleshed out well. Background sounds were included, such as an alarm going off. The story takes place in the future, with genius-level theoretical scientists conducting a proof-of-concept test to obtain research funding. An alien spaceship appears and destroys the space station with our heroes jumping into an escape craft fleeing destruction. Then there are different universes, more aliens, magic and humorous repartee. Very enjoyable!

Light-Hearted Fun

Interested in a light-hearted romp through the multiverse? Wants lots of action and plenty of movie and roleplaying game references? Want the feel of a hard sf backdrop without actually having to get bogged down in the math and incomprehensible theories? Well that’s what I found in The Heisenberg Corollary, an amazingly fun sf adventure which finds a simple solution to permitting the cast of heroes to discover just about anything you can imagine in the multiverse.

The plot revolves around Zeke Travers and his fellow scientists who accidentally trigger an interdimensional chase when they test out Zeke’s life’s work—a device that permits travel to other universes. The problem—something follows the device back to earth and begins ripping through the multiverse in its efforts to catch Zeke and its device. Most of the rest of the novel is built around Zeke and his friends’ attempts to first escape and then stop the aliens who are pursuing them. The plot gets rather fanciful as it proceeds, but the fun never lets up and the pace never slackens.

Narrator Will Hahn pulled out all the stops with this one. In addition to rip-roaring, highly distinctive voices for the entire cast, he threw in enough sound effects to make this nearly a fully dramatized experience. Not enough narrators are able to bring that higher level of stagecraft to a novel, and not many authors have created an experience that lends itself so well to such dramatic audio creations.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
