About this listen

The last member of a murdered House tries to protect his ward from forced marriage to a monster while uncovering clues to his own tortured past.

The Tarot Sequence imagines a modern-day Atlantis off the coast of Massachusetts, governed by powerful Courts based on the traditional Tarot deck.

Rune Saint John, last child of the fallen Sun Throne, is backed into a fight of high court magic and political appetites in a desperate bid to protect his ward, Max, from a forced marital alliance with the Hanged Man.

Rune's resistance will take him to the island's dankest corners, including a red light district made of moored ghost ships; a surreal skyscraper farm; and the floor of the ruling Convocation, where a gathering of Arcana will change Rune's life forever.

I've listened 3 times, I'll probably listen more

I absolutely love this series and can't wait for the next installment. The author as well as the narrator are both amazing at telling this wonderful modern fantasy adventure. I love all the characters, and it has moved me to tears both from sadness and laughter.

I wish there were more stories like this modern fantasy, with great characters and diversity. There might be some and I haven't seen them, so I still say we need more like this.

The main shining feature of this series is the characters and their relationships with each other, I have never listened or read a book that has so many just wonderful characters and relationships and showing how many different relationships one can have. it's beautiful and why I love it so much.

Dark story with the best developing relationships

I'm writing this review almost a month since I listened to this. Do I remember much about it? Bits and pieces. Does that mean that I didn't like it or it wasn't good? HECK NO! Especially since I tend to do things while listening and some times I space out.

But Rune's relationships with Addam -and oh the angst there at a particular scene was such a punch to the feelings-, Quinn, Max, Brand -especially when the fought about Brand's visits to The Green Docks, or the folders about his Brand's past, even more so when Brand reminded Rune when they first learned about it when they were 5 or 6 and Rune was determined to free Brand-, the Dawncreeks is what stole the stage from a story that was quite dark!

From everything that happened and was revealed about The Hanged Man, what lives in my mind from this sequel was Rune demanding his place in the Arcana to save the people he loves, his developing and strengthening relationships with those people, a found family that keeps getting bigger and bigger, giving Rune the strength to do things he wasn't sure he could go after, what with having only 7-8 sigils.

It was amazing and the narration did it justice. Kudos to Josh Hurley for his incredible work.

What made me remove a star from the overall rating, because performance and story deserve the full 5, is the constant use of "I /he/she said" in dialogues that was extremely annoying listening to it in the audiobook.

Now I need to get my act together and listen to The Hourglass Throne

I like the premise of the Arcana

I like that he (the writer) uses the tarot cards as characters and houses in the arcana. Brilliant ideas and little stuff comes back around later. Very humorous too

Amazing!

I am in adoration of these characters, their relationships, their interplay and dialogue. I want to read and hear more and more about them.
It’s all beautiful and compelling. And hilarious!

My only regret is that I didn’t write a review on the first book which was fantastic and hooked me hard. Now the best friendship and budding romance have grown into family, and this family is formidable and finding footing.

I’m torn between biding my time before starting the next book and diving in. (Who am I kidding, gets into pike position…) i don’t want to it to end.

Far Better Than The First

KD Edwards wrote an excellent introduction with The Last Sun. That book establishes rules and culture as well as the beginnings of the overall mystery of this series. In this book, we see the writer flourish. KDE is playful with his characters and yet dark as the deepest seas. He is also kind to his characters in that though he forces them to see or be participants in dark events, he offers them solace and hope. Far darker than his previous book, KDE balances it far better with humor and wit. KDE also shows that his characters and cultures have real flaws. They are human, they are real and you the reader find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with their logic because of it. For example, I agree that Rune fails to see the larger picture. While he begins to in this book, it is clear he is still centered on his survival his trauma his stubbornness. It is good that KDE challenges his characters and forces them to grow.
What a marvelous book and what a marvelous world he has crafter. I eagerly await The Hourglass Throne.
