About this listen

A desperate wallflower...

As the fourth daughter of a baron, Miss Hannah Fairchild has no dreams of grandeur when it comes to marriage. Forget a duke or an earl. The shy, spinsterly wallflower would be happy with a doctor or (even better) the bookseller's son. Unfortunately, if she wants to save her family from financial ruin - and her father from debtor's prison - a duke is precisely what she needs.

A disfigured duke...

Severely injured from a fall as a young child, the Duke of Wycliffe has spent much of his adult life in bitter seclusion. Withdrawn from the outside world and everyone in it who mocked him for his physical disfigurement, Evan fully intends to spend the rest of his days in isolation at Wycliffe Manor. Until a stammering, gray-eyed bookmouse arrives on his doorstep and proposes marriage.

An unexpected proposal...

To Hannah's disbelief, the Duke of Wycliffe actually agrees to her ridiculous proposal - under one condition. Their marriage, such as it is, will be in name only. But there are no guarantees when two lonely, vulnerable hearts are involved...and soon Hannah and Evan find themselves doing the one thing they promised they wouldn't. Falling in love.

Contains mature themes.

Love conquers all

Next in the series by Jillian, Eaton, the Autumn Duchess as presented on Audible is a quick but engaging story. Narrated by Mary Sarah we meet Hannah Fairchild, whose father is a breath away from the poor house. Hannah being the only one of his four daughters to whom frivolous spending is a apparent. The only way she might keep her father out of Deb‘s prison is to make a brilliant marriage to someone with wealth. somewhat of a wallflower, and never having met the Duke of Wycliffe, Hannah approaches and proposes a marriage of convenience. A childhood accident has left the Duke with a damaged leg and an ugly facial scar. Having been hurt by women of the ton. The Duke has sworn off the chance of love. Never fear, there is.a HEA.

I enjoyed this story as well as Miss Eaton’s other works. It’s a perfect length for an afternoon or late evening read.

Beauty & the Beast

Definitely giving Beauty and the Beast vibes, and not just because he's disfigured.

Evan has secluded himself over the past few years after a horrible woman and her friends humiliated him at a ball.

Hannah is in need of a husband with means to help save her family from financial ruin, but after years of being on the marriage mart with no prospects, her sister suggests the Duke of Wycliffe.

With their plan devised, Hannah sets out to meet Evan and propose marriage. Of course, when they meet and even after, he is a rude ass, but he does agree to marry her.

I can understand him being distrustful of her motives due to his past experiences, but to be an outright a-hole? On the other hand, I don't mind an a-hole, if the redemption is really good, but I just don't think the men in this series groveled enough after the way the behaved towards the women.

Best of the series

Finally a true romance for a Dutchess! The writing has much improved from book 1. Loved both characters because I could relate to both! Their emotions, interactions and dialog were spot on. I could feel what they felt as ea developed into a admirable couple. I wish there had been more kissing but understood that for a novella there was enough to convey desire, longing and love.
I think this would have made a wonderful full flushed out novel, especially with the introduction of the 2nd couple but alas it ended too soon. I hope we learn of the sisters fate in another book down the line.

Surprisingly, very good narration from Sarah.

A Nice Ending to the Series

With the exception of the 3rd book, I can I I wholeheartedly enjoyed this series. Hannah and Evan’s story was sweet. I wouldn’t mind finding out what happens to Hannah’s sister and Colbrook!

Great Series!

I have really enjoyed this series. This book definitely took a different spin on the typical romance book.

Excellent Short Series

It was nice hearing about a love story between two not-so-perfect individuals & how they overlooked the handicaps of others to find love & beauty on the inside was what really mattered.
