About this listen

Lisa Kleypas is back with a stunning new historical romance!

Listeners have long waited for the return of New York Times best-selling author Lisa Kleypas to historical romance - and now she's back with her most breathtaking yet.

A twist of fate...

Devon Ravenel, London's most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities...and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl's three innocent sisters are still occupying the house - along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon's own.

A clash of wills...

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny - and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains:

Can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she's ever known?

One of the better written books by LK

This book is one of my favorite books by LK in the writing sense. Very well written and clever. Characters were developed nicely and the change in personalities was also very well delivered as the story took shape. My only disappointment? Well I hate an unfinished ending. Forces one to wait for the next book to determine what the fate of the characters involved truly is. Other than that I LOVED this book

Absolutely Recommended

I absolutely love the way Ms Wells narrates. The story is already great, but she just elevates it to a whole new level of enjoyment. Will start the next book immediately.

Beautifully written, dynamically narrated.

Lisa Kleypas is a thoughtful writer who envelopes you naturally in the historical setting. Her turn of phrase is excellent, and every descriptor moves the story forward.

Mary Jane Wells has the clearest, most elegant voice I’ve heard in an audiobook, and her modifications for each character were remarkably distinct, without feeling like caricature. A huge Bravo to her performance.

The narrator OMG

Purchasing audible books are nice, but the success of listening to and enjoying the book no matter how well written, depends greatly on the narrator.

The story was so enjoyable, hot and tempting as well as enthralling if it was in paperback I would have enjoyed reading it!

But it was the voice or voices of Ms Wells superb ability to draw her audience and captivate from beginning to end that would not release me until I listened thru to the end. I've purchased several books by the author and most are narrated by Ms Wells!

Completely enjoyed this book and love the narrator

This story can be read as a stand alone book, but when you read the entire series, as I have, you will want to read them all in order. I love Mary Jane Wells as she narrates the story and the characters come to life, her voice inflections will have you laughing.
I loved this story and I couldn't wait to read the next book in the series to find out how the story unfolded.

I definitely recommend this book.

Wonderful Start to This Series

What does Mary Jane Wells bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really enjoy Mary Jane Wells's interpretation of the characters as they appear in all the books of this series. She brings them to life in the way I think the author intended.

Any additional comments?

I am very fond of how Lisa Kleypas develops her characters, even minor ones. She finds a way to add breadth to them without reverting to overly done tropes of this genre. I appreciated the mix of vulnerability, spirit, and independence of Kathleen, and the devilish appeal combined with a soft underbelly of Devon. The transformation of West nicely added to the overall lure of the book. I found myself looking forward to when I could listen this book and probably found extra reasons to do so.

Sigh...😍

Absolutely loved this story. If it makes me tear up then it's a winner in my eyes. Mary Jane Wells is a favorite narrator so that also helps.
Recommend this whole series.

Great story - terrible narrator

I love Lisa Kleypas! Several of her books are on my top ten list of favorite romances. It's difficult to start a new series and at first I found it difficult to get into the story. It took a while but once I did, I really enjoyed it. I liked the peripheral characters more than the main characters so I was pleased to learn that the next book in the series (Marrying Winterborne) focused on Lady Helen and the fascinating Winterborne.
Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in the narrator. Her accent sounded phoney. She barely distinguished between the characters with her voice. At times, I had trouble determining who was talking in scenes with several characters. It sounded more like a reading that anyone could have done. I'm sorry to say that I purchased the next audio book in the series (Marrying Winterborne) before listening to this one and as a result, I will probably never listen to it. What a waste! This recording made me want to tear my hair out. If it had been a disk or cassette like in the old days, I would have tossed it out the car window. That also means, I won't be buying the newest one - Devil in Spring.
