Publisher's summary

Faced with a shattering loss, a young widow searches for answers, acceptance, and family resilience.

After taking her sons on a hike with the family dog one beautiful fall afternoon, Charlotte returned home to find a policewoman, a policeman, and a priest in her driveway—there to deliver the news of her husband’s suicide. Charlotte knew her husband had been stressed about work, but she had no idea he was suicidal. She thought he had stayed home to take a nap.

As a young widow, Charlotte cried, cursed, meditated, medicated, downward-dogged, and ran as a way to make sense of her husband’s suicide. As the mother of two bereft sons, she summoned her inner strength and clarity in order to provide steady guidance for them to navigate their own ways through the ensuing months and years. Her story offers intimate moments and powerful lessons, as well as practical ways through which not only suicide survivors, but any of us experiencing loss, can move forward to live lives of joy and purpose.

I lost my husband to suicide in July 2022. I can relate to just about everything Ms. Maya says.

You fall in love with the author!

Charlotte shares her memoir in such a personal way, letting us in on her deepest feelings. Her ability to accept her growth as an adult while tenderly accepting, nurturing and respecting the unthinkable tragedy that allowed her to be the person she desired to be.

Honest, raw, beautifully written and read

I’m not one to seek out grief memoirs, but started to listen because I know the audiobook producer. I was immediately drawn in by the smart, clear, and refreshing voice of Maya, and loved every hour of listening. Her family’s drama is painful material, but Maya’s storytelling makes it worth listening. And oh so humbling for those of us who have not lost someone to suicide.
I recommend it warmly.

Heartbreaking and Heartwarming

Exquisitely written in beautiful prose, this memoir captures the hearts of all who read/ listen.
I found myself mourning her late husband, Sam with every passage while simultaneously cheering on Charlotte and her 4 kids (and Tim).
This book is written in such a heartbreaking and heartfelt manner that I found myself crying and laughing all within a 10 minute period.
The courage it took to process these feelings and put them into words, is unimaginable. However, Charlotte Maya , a widow, a mother, a wife, and a beautifully articulate and poetic writer, did so with grace, and a full heart.

I applaud her and admire her.
I am so grateful for her work.
This memoir is a masterpiece

Felt like she was ready my story.

Suicide survival is such a lonely walk. Although I hate that there are others who have taken and will take this journey, it is comforting to not feel alone and have someone who has been down the path, help shine a light in the dark, winding curves. This book is filled with such honesty and emotion. The narration is touching and entertaining. Thank you for sharing your story and helping to try and bring healing to so many others.
