Publisher's summary

Maybe the best way to explain Bill Heavey's writing is to note that both Ted Nugent and the Wall Street Journal - two entities rarely seen in the same sentence - like it. For more than 20 years, Heavey has staked a claim as one of America's best sportsmen writers. In feature stories and his Field & Stream column A Sportsman's Life, he has taken audiences across the country and beyond to experience his triumphs and failures as a suburban dad who happens to love hunting and fishing.

This new collection gathers together a wide range of his best work - tales that are odes to the notion that enthusiasm is more important than skill and testaments to the enduring power of the natural world. Whether he's hunting mule deer in Montana, draining cash on an overpriced pistol, or ruminating on the joys and agonies of outdoor gear, Heavey always entertains and enlightens with honesty and wit.

60 Pieces

This book is a collection of 60 pieces written by Bill Heavey for Field and Stream magazine. Most of them are humorous. Most of the humor is at his own expense. Most of them include references to his inability to stop buying and hoarding gear. Heavey’s humor is slow, subtle, and sometimes sneaky. Also, he tends to throw really heavy, emotional themes in when you least expect it. Heavey is the outdoor writer that people feel sorry for, from time to time, because of his bad luck and self-inflicted mediocrity. He tells great stories about world-class guides putting him on target of the best game, only to blow the shot. He tells about his crazy fishing buddies and their adventures. He tells about trying to parent a teenage daughter and all of their struggles. Thanks, Dad, for the recommendation.

This book is for dads, fishermen, hunters, and anyone needing a boost.

(Rated PG-13, Score 9/10)

liked to meet him.

listened to while hunting. the most true thing is that doe's that are 1 to 2 years old really are the best. and I like that the stories are broken up instead of continues.

Heavey is hilarious.

Like all of his writing, this book is funny. It’s also brutally honest at times. Metaphors I would never come up with. It’s truly a great collection of stories. The bad part is the narrator. He’s obviously not an outdoorsman. His pronunciation of simple words such as filet are absolutely horrendous. I spent more time than I should have yelling at his horrible presentation of the English language.

Americana at its finest...

Mr. Heavey writes like he just outgrew the crayon and sand box on his way to "winning" another participation trophy last week... just kidding Bill! This and all of Bill's books are filled with wonderful stories for anyone that has a true appreciation and love for fishing and hunting and the outdoors in general. Despite his terrible marksmanship, Mr. Heavey has an amazing ability to shoot straight through the "heart" when it comes to writing his columns and stories. This book offers a refreshing and pure sense of the American outdoor lifestyle that I grew up with and continue to yearn for, which overall and unfortunately seems to be fading faster than ever in today's modern society, regrettably sad. Mr. Heavey's writings offer a keen awareness of both down to Earth practicality combined with a longing for common sense, or a lack thereof in many cases! I highly recommend Mr. Heavey's books to anyone that smiles to themselves when they think of the silent snow falling through the pines, early morning turkey gobbles echoing off the mountain, netting a beautiful holdover brookie or the week-long hunting trip with friends that wasn't highlighted by the "kill(s)" but much more so by everyone laughing so hard that they still cry when recalling how everyone made fun of the wannabe woods-wise guy named "Bill" that whole week... If you can relate to any of the above, then you will enjoy every chapter here!!

more memoir than guide

was hoping for more "how to", but this book has some warm stories of a man's life in the wilderness hunting.
