In 1804, John Colter set out with Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on the first US expedition to traverse the North American continent. During the 28-month ordeal, Colter served as a hunter and scout, and honed his survival skills on the western frontier. But when the journey was over, Colter stayed behind. He spent two more years trekking alone through dangerous and unfamiliar territory, charting some of the West's most treasured landmarks.

In Wildlife Wars, Terry Grosz serves up fascinating stories - alternately hair-raising, hilarious, and heart-wrenching - from his 30-year struggle to protect wildlife in America. A natural storyteller, Grosz writes about the remarkable characters he met - on both sides of the law - as he matched wits with elk poachers, salmon snaggers, commercial-market duck hunters, and a host of other law-breakers. Best of all, though, these stories are so remarkably entertaining you won't want to put them down.

Historia
The “mountain men” were the hunters and trappers who fiercely strode the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid-1800s. They braved the elements in search of the skins of beavers and other wild animals, to sell or barter for goods. The lifestyle of the mountain men could be harsh, existing as they did among animals, and spending most of their days and nights living and camping out in the great unexplored wilds of the Rockies.

Having grown disillusioned with the miserable existence that is expected of young college students, the newlyweds Bill and Ruth Albee dream of heading to Alaska, on foot, by way of a vast blank space on the map that is modern day Western British Columbia. Like most most dreams, it dug into their body, mind, and soul until nothing could satisfy it until they had given it a try. So, in 1930, they started off, ignoring all warnings and leaving from Vancouver on foot up through western B.C.

Historia
Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to only a handful of people, is a harsh and lonely place. So when James Campbell's cousin Heimo Korth asked him to spend a summer building a cabin in the rugged Interior, Campbell hesitated about inviting his 15-year-old daughter, Aidan, to join him. Would she be able to withstand clouds of mosquitoes, the threat of grizzlies, bathing in an ice-cold river, and hours of grueling labor peeling and hauling logs? But once there, Aidan embraced the wild.

After paddling alone for several days, he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams", which he named Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer-timber for a cabin; fish, game, and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without.

The stories in Kerplunk! travel the byways and highways of the Pacific Northwest, bringing to life offbeat, down-home characters who hope their grandchildren can pick the lock on the gun safe because they've forgotten the combination, who know exactly why it costs $500 to make a fly lure that retails for $2, and who aren't afraid to confront the problems of bird-dog flatulence.

A retired law enforcement officer turned pilot and a former math teacher chose to leave their home in Texas for a cabin in the wilderness of Alaska. They left life as they knew it behind to start fresh in the land of the Last Frontier. Their cabin on Cub Lake was only accessible by bush plane in the summer or snow machine during the winter, making life challenging. They knew their learning curve would be steep. What they didn't realize was living on a homestead in the wilderness of Alaska would make them face obstacles they had never experienced before.

In 1973, Norma Cobb, her husband Lester, and their five children pulled up stakes in the lower 48 and headed north to Alaska to follow a pioneer dream of claiming land under the Homestead Act. The only land available lay north of Fairbanks near the Arctic Circle where grizzlies outnumbered humans 20 to one. In addition to fierce winters and predatory animals, the Alaskan frontier drew the more unsavory elements of society's fringes. From the beginning, the Cobbs found themselves pitted in a life or death feud with unscrupulous neighbors who would rob from new settlers.

"Alaskan Bear Hunt" is the true story of an Alaskan bear hunt as told by my grandfather in 1917. He left Kodiak with the grade school principal and a Russian guide for a small island where they would begin their hunt. My grandfather vividly recounts the beauty of the water, the mountains, and forest as well as the hardships they encountered on their Alaskan adventure. One wonders as you read the account how the hunters survived their adventure with clothing and equipment ...

A book for every outdoors men across the globe.
I absolutely loved this book, the detail along with the story telling pulled you in to a point that you can’t put the book down or shot the phone or computer off to stop listening. This book fills your soul and rekindles your love for adventure and reminds you that your never alone as long as you have god and Jesus by your side. If you are a sportsman I will guarantee that you will not be able to put the book down or stop listening it’s that addictive. I look forward to reading more books from this author, the way he pulls you in with his writing I can’t explain it but it’s like he writes to every type of reader from people who read great books like Shakespeare and Poe to dr Seuss. I just would even bet that you could get someone from P.E.T.A to read and in joy this book. I am currently studying to take my Maine Guides exam for hunting and fishing, after reading this book I can’t wait to start hearing other people’s stories and eventually start telling my own.
Thank you very much for writing such a page turner. It has definitely made me smile, lifted my spirits and fueled the fire even more to be a better person a better Christian and a better steward of the land.

Wide variety of fascinating stories.
After reading so many wildlife/outdoors/hunting/survival books, Wild Men, Wild Alaska was a pleasant surprise! Great story telling, from an honest, humble, very relatable story-teller. Don’t miss this one.
