good interlacing of the three stories covered

The narrator does a very good job, the stories are well told, albeit the conclusion and introduction are the weakest parts of the book by far (especially the conclusion has Far Too Much Pathos). The stories are well told, though the North Pole controversy could do with a more nuanced view/is not critical enough.

Good account of the exploration era of the poles

Good information and very well read make this audio book entertain and get some history of the battle for the poles.

Broad but varied, a good overview of an exciting year

The narrator gives an amazing performance in this book, first of all. Something about his reading suits the text very well. As far as the text itself, it’s interesting, not amazingly thrilling, and jumps around a bit much for my taste. I’m pretty sure there are better books about each of the individual subjects and expeditions within this book, however the author gave a very good overview of the arctic and Antarctic races to the poles, and a fair/cursory overview of very early high altitude mountaineering. Overall interesting enough, and an enjoyable listen.
