About this listen

On April 7, 1844, Joseph Smith gave a sermon in Nauvoo, Illinois, at a general conference of the church. In attendance were nearly 20,000 church members.

A few weeks earlier, on March 9, a church member and close friend of Joseph named King Follett was killed in an accident. This well-known event in Nauvoo led Joseph Smith to comment specifically on Follett’s death and to address what Joseph called “[T]he subject of the dead”. For this reason, Joseph’s sermon has often been referred to as the King Follett sermon or discourse.

The King Follett discourse is recorded along with two other sermons given by Joseph Smith in the Journal of Discourses. Each of the three discourses have been compiled together to form the present work, and additional commentary and insights have been added so the modern listener may better understand the principles taught therein and thus feel an increase in their faith.

Enlightening

Many precepts I had heard vaguely that were expounded upon. A clearer picture of actual words and thoughts provided. Very enjoyable!

Beautifully presented - excellent

This will be enjoyable to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and perhaps serious religious scholars.

For members of the above, the content will be enjoyable and uplifting. It will provide spiritually uplifting content and a beautiful addition to Sunday study.

Discourses are wonderful, editing is not

This is definitely worth listening to for what information it gives. Unfortunately the editing is poor. There were a few “redo’s” that weren’t edited out and a few paragraphs completely repeated. But, overall this is very good. The narrator does a good job.

The truth is delicious! Craving more!

Outstandingly profound and so beautifully simple and easy to understand. The gospel works, and it makes sense too.

Quoted words of Joseph Smith were great. The apologetic introduction and post script were simply apologetic.

I would definitely have enjoyed this more without having to listen to all of the apologetic justification from people trying to justify the LDS churches position. Let Joseph Smith speak for himself.

Great insights on King Follett doctrine

I was pleasant surprised how well researched the "new commentary for the modern reader" section supports the doctrines Joseph Smith teaches in the King Follett discourse. A must read for anyone searching for truth. I had no idea that so many early Christians taught the same doctrines.

A draft edition?

The content is true and clearly presented. There are some valuable forewords and afterwords that help to contextualize what is presented as well, giving the listening a well rounded idea of what is taught.

Interesting to me, it sounds like the audio was never edited - the reader makes a few mistakes and restarts passages two or three times in the reading, but it was never edited out. He even gives indication that he is restarting, the way you might expected a reader indicates to the editor that they should splice a section. But it was rare, and did not greatly hurt the listening experience. A bite sized reading of great value.
