About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Charles Martin offers us “grace, mercy, and forgiveness in this sweeping love story" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Allie is still recovering from the loss of her family's beloved waterfront restaurant on Florida's Gulf Coast when she loses her second husband to a terrifying highway accident. Devastated and losing hope, she shudders to contemplate the future - until a cherished person from her past returns.

Joseph has been adrift for many years, wounded in both body and spirit and unable to come to terms with the trauma of his Vietnam War experiences. Just as he resolves to abandon his search for peace and live alone at a remote cabin in the Carolina mountains, he discovers a mother and her two small children lost in the forest. A man of character and strength, he instinctively steps in to help them get back to their home in Florida. There he will return to his own hometown - and witness the accident that launches a bittersweet reunion with his childhood sweetheart, Allie.

When Joseph offers to help Allie rebuild her restaurant, it seems the flame may reignite - until a 45-year-old secret from the past begins to emerge, threatening to destroy all hope for their second chance at love.

In Send Down the Rain, Charles Martin proves himself to be a storyteller of great wisdom and compassion who bears witness to the dreams we cherish, the struggles we face, and the courage we must summon when life seems to threaten what we hold most dear.

“Charles Martin understands the power of story and he uses it to alter the souls and lives of both his characters and his readers.” (Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times best-selling author)

This story hopped around so much I needed a pencil and piece of paper to keep up. I still have no idea how it was all connected. Lost me before I could figure it out. Did not finish the first third of the story.

I can't keep up!!!

Excellent as always. Every Charles Martin I listen to I am once again blown away by the adventure, mystery and love. And hate when they end. I just want to start all over again and wisp away in thought.

Bravo bravo

Martin writes here with great balance much as an adroit preacher uses a sermon to instruct and challenge without making one feel preached to. I particularly enjoy that the suspense he creates isn’t predicated on violence or sex. Adam Verner’s pace and intonation let me sink into the characters. He does women’s voices well enough that it isn’t distracting.

Delicately woven story

Martin brings unconditional love and hope to life. Great respect for Vietnam veterans and people who sacrifice themselves for others.

Awesome and inspiring, highly recommend!

Overall, this was a good story, but about half way through one of the key aspects of the ending became obvious. Also, the story had too many hard to believe situations that the main character survived unscathed. A little overdone in my opinion.

Pretty good, but....

Send down the rain is a long convoluted story that wrings your heart and then gathers all the strings together at the end in a beautiful tapestry.
I highly recommend this audiobook. And the reader was perfect.

Excellent, emotional, involving and satisfying

Charles Martin writes beautifully! I enjoyed the story, the vindication of the underdogs, the twists and turns of the characters story lines. Mostly that the goodness in people shines through the dark stuff!!! I thinks it is what we need in life and the stories we absorb. Narration was excellent.

I loved everything about this story!
