Publisher's summary

An invisible message from a dead man resurrects a decades-old mystery.

With her sharpened magical senses, Sylvia recognizes invisible writing while cataloging an obscure book for the library. She’s shocked to discover the message, written many years earlier, pleaded for help. She’s even more shocked to discover the author of the message was married to a paper magician. Could there be a connection to Sylvia’s father?

With a magical mystery on her hands, Sylvia engages the help of Gabe Glass, and together they follow the clues to the location of two hidden ledgers that implicate a very dangerous individual in an illegal bookmaking scheme. Although not named, Gabe is convinced he knows who the bookmaker is, and sets out to prove it.

The investigation draws them into the shady underbelly of the horseracing industry and uncovers a link to Gabe’s parents that takes everyone by surprise. As they unravel the mystery’s tangled threads, unexpected twists and turns lead them to the truth.

But the greatest twist of all is the danger no one saw coming.

Not as engaging as her previous works

The story did not flow as well as her past books in this series. Couldn't buy into Gabe letting Willy control his life so much. Didn't fit with the character development of Gabe in previous stories.

Interesting developments!

Sylvia and Gabe's stories have both developed in this book. Sylvia learns even more about her familial roots and add new members to her family and Gabe is tricked into revealing his magic affinity to those wishing to test him. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I love these characters! ❤️

I couldn’t wait to start this book after binging both this series and the Glass and Steel series. I forgot how much I adored all the characters (thanks in part to Marian Hussey’s delightful narration)

Keeps getting better

First off, the narration is perfect as always. I listen to a lot of books and she is by far my favorite. The story wasn’t as fun as other books but the bar is super high for this series so that isn’t saying much- I still thoroughly enjoyed it. And I don’t want to give spoilers but something I’ve waited for since the very beginning is happening in the next book and I can’t believe I have to wait until March!

Enjoyable but…

I’ve enjoyed the Library series so far but have to say it’s not much of a spinoff from the Glass & Steele series (loved it!). Except for name changes, Gabe and Sylvia are copies of Matt and India in familiar situations. The other favorite primary characters from Glass & Steele are here unchanged 20+ years later, protecting Gabe the same as they did Matt. Willy’s strident 1-note personality is tiresome now and could use a little aging since there’s so much of her. These comments aside, the narrator’s performance is 5-star and the story is inventive and engaging enough to be well worth the time and credit.
