About this listen

Do you sometimes feel as if you're just going through the motions in life? Are you good at looking and acting as if you're fine, but secretly feel lonely and disconnected? If so, you are not alone. The world is full of people who have an innate sense that something is wrong with them - who feel they live on the outside looking in, but have no explanation for this feeling and no way to put it into words.

If you are one of these people, you may fear that you are not connected enough to your spouse, or that you don't feel pleasure or love as profoundly as others do. You may drink too much, or eat too much, or risk too much, in an attempt to feel something good.

Running on Empty will give you clear strategies for how to heal, and offers a special chapter for mental-health professionals. In the world of human suffering, this book is an emotional smart bomb meant to eradicate the effects of an invisible enemy.

It hit the nail on the head for me with content but the narrator's voice was too robotic for me.

Great content. Struggled with robotic narrator.

This book has changed my life already! Rather than going through life as I feel I should, I’m actually listening to what my feelings are telling me and acting accordingly. A must read for anyone who didn’t get the right emotional support in childhood

Life changing book!

While I found this to be helpful in initially understanding emotional neglect, I felt like I could have skipped it and gone straight to her 2nd book "Running on Empty No More". I found I related more to the examples in the 2nd book.

Good start for understanding emotional neglect.

What did you love best about Running on Empty?

I love anything that can change my thought process and help me make changes in myself and this book did that.

What other book might you compare Running on Empty to and why?

None stand alone book here folks.

Which character – as performed by Karen White – was your favorite?

No characters, the narrator was great though.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I had an extreme change of heart about my own patterns and my own behavior.

Any additional comments?

I don't think we all have a narcissist. I don't think people are incapable of change. I do think we have all been hurt. I do think we could all be better people. And aside from Jesus there is no redemption. But I think there are thoughts that are profound and help to make us better spouses, better parents, or better friends and this book is full of those thoughts. So if you want a book that tells you why your loved one is your narcissist this isn't the book, but if you want a book that helps you get past your own pain and helps you break the cycle this is it! 5 stars is not enough but that's all audible allows.

I get the hype, self help it's real folks

...i had no idea what CEN was, or that every last minute of this book would feel entirely relevant to me. i wish i'd learned of this years ago. what Jonice Webb's exploration of this theory accomplishes is, i think, no small feat of modern psychology, and the elusive intangible 'something' i think many of us recognize in our lives but cannot exactly place or even begin to explain. i never wanted children and couldn't articulate why - now i get it. having felt powerless as a child, and knowing no different of 'childhood' of course i wouldn't feel inclined to repeat that - this book finally helped me understand why. parents largely do the best they can; in my case, mine just didn't know what they didn't know, and truly did the best they could - so if you're curious, it's not a book about parental blame whatsoever, it just helps you see the connection between cause and effect, your yesterday and today. a decade of therapy never even came close to providing such insight.

I really like this book when it comes to parents and emotional neglect. I think that what is written is well said and it focuses on helping the person be more self aware of what might have caused them harm.

This was helpful.
