About this listen

Do you sometimes feel as if you're just going through the motions in life? Are you good at looking and acting as if you're fine, but secretly feel lonely and disconnected? If so, you are not alone. The world is full of people who have an innate sense that something is wrong with them - who feel they live on the outside looking in, but have no explanation for this feeling and no way to put it into words.

If you are one of these people, you may fear that you are not connected enough to your spouse, or that you don't feel pleasure or love as profoundly as others do. You may drink too much, or eat too much, or risk too much, in an attempt to feel something good.

Running on Empty will give you clear strategies for how to heal, and offers a special chapter for mental-health professionals. In the world of human suffering, this book is an emotional smart bomb meant to eradicate the effects of an invisible enemy.

Good book with somewhat robotic sounding narrator

I loved the content and it's great for therapist use. It was difficult to listen to this narrator. It was similar to listening to Siri trying to narrate a book which is the reason I left off one star overall

great content, annoying voice.

the author nails it on the head, getting to the root of most common conditions. I'll recommend this to anyone. the lady reading the book sounded so raspy and cold that I had to listen to it sped up just to get through it. I'm buying the hard copy to re-read just to avoid that whiny dogmatic voice and because it's a great book.

Helpful book but terrible narrator

I thought this book was very helpful in recognizing patterns within myself that can be attributed to childhood neglect. There's also a section on parenting. I just couldn't stand the voice...I can't imagine anyone wanting to listen to this lady for any amount of time. I powered through it.

So Much Insight

This explained so much about why I am the way I am. Not enough info out there about emotional neglect. Awesome book!

Just what I needed to heal

I had an emotionally neglectful mother who was also physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually abusive. While I have forgiven her there are things in my life that I wondered why I struggle with them so much. This book helped me discover that the emotional neglect I suffered is the root issue for those struggles. My life makes so much sense now, and I know now to move forward.

Thankful for this book !!!

I’ve been looking for an answering to what I felt so empty for a long time. This book hit the nail on the head. I love how the author we’re straight to the point and gave many examples that were valid for understanding. Even the tools have helped me tremendously. I feel like an adult taking charge of my own life and giving myself when I’ve never had in the past. I’m so thankful for people like Janice who felt the need to write a book such as this to help so many others.

Answers to so many questions!

I had been in therapy for almost a decade before I discovered the root of my issues - emotional neglect. I discovered this on my own and have been looking for more information. Listening to this book has been incredible! I now understand why every day I face challenges like not being good enough, feeling like something is still wrong with me (even though I got sober & am in recovery from bulimia, have quit cigarettes and completely changed how I eat - I’ve put in the work, over the last 10 years). This book also helped me realize I’m not alone. My heart goes out to everyone trying to work through this!

In Childhood

In places there wasn't enough declarative examples or explanatory reasoning and in other cases seem to lull behind. For the most part I really enjoyed the book. I picked out the book expecting a master's degree text, but it isn't that way at all. The performance was superb!

Very Insightful

This was suggested my my coach....so, so good. I look forward to printing off the worksheets for additionally working on healing from these deep empty spaces. I'm really thankful to pass on healthier emotional intelligence to my own children.

CEN - If you have it, this will speak to you.

I found myself nodding along with 80 to 90 percent of the examples and insights.
