Acerca de esta escucha

An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships.

Does this sound painfully familiar?

Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors - and are unable to stop.

Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact. In doing so, she destigmatizes the shame that comes with being under-mothered and misdiagnosed. McDaniel offers a healing path with powerful tools that include therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes in service to healthy relationships.

The constant search for mother love can be a lifelong emotional burden, but healing begins with knowing and naming what we are missing. McDaniel is the first clinician to identify Mother Hunger, which demystifies the search for love and provides the compass that each woman needs to end the struggle with achy, lonely emptiness, and come home to herself.

Everything was great up until the end.

I really enjoyed the majority of this book but I really disliked the anti-masking commentary at the end. Studies have been showing for years that child care centers have nothing on fostering development quite like a loving attached parent/consistent caretaker. In those circumstances studies are showing that babies absolutely thrive -and masking isn't necessary. If anything we should be looking at how these securely attached babies are thriving developmentally when parents/consistent care taker is with them. And then supporting families in any way we can as a society to have the ability to stay home with their children. Overall, I would recommend the book but suggest skipping the conclusion.

Powerful and educational

Finally a book that helps to validate and explain my feelings I’ve had for 40+ years of my life. It was hard to listen to at moments and it brought me to tears several times. Luckily I have an amazing therapist with whom I’ve done EMDR for childhood trauma involving my mother. I can continue healing further with the new insights this book has provided me.

Wow. Just wow!!!

This book spoke to me on so many ways. It helped me understand why i do things i do and why i am addicted. My mother was never there. She writes so beautifully and i truly am thankful to the person who recommended it to me.

The first step to safely coming home to yourself

This book compassionately names the attachment injuries too often suffered at the hands of mothers without demonizing, blaming or victimizing mother or child.
It’s the first step in acknowledging how your needs weren’t met and that you deserved the care and attention you lacked as a child.
This book will give you an understanding of the complexities of mother hunger while providing tools, resources and a roadmap to healing your self.

Great content, subpar narration

The audio quality is terrible. I’m glad the author read it, but the volume is wonky and it is SO SLOW. Bc the sound quality is bad, speeding it up sounds choppy. I’d recommend buying the actual book, but if you have to listen, the content is 100% worth it.

Compelling content, challenging tone!

The content is compelling. However, I struggled because of the narrator's voice. It felt like an attempt at soothing the listener, amd it drove me crazy. I wish the reading was in a different tone, and not so mournful.

Very detailed!

I have read several books on this subject and this one really goes into detail about how various things can affect children's sense of self and their emotional well being. It also gives details about how different types of childhood trauma can affect attachment style and difficulty with relationships far into adulthood.

information explosion

What a smartly written, educational account about the impact of neglect on the development of babies. Must read, if you are a mother to be - or even just dreaming of it. A very clarifying read for an adult survivor of child abuse/neglect.

Wow!

This book was a tough one because it brought out things I knew I’d experienced but never dealt with. Now I can use this to help me go deeper in therapy to truly heal.
