Publisher's summary

The memoir by the doctor who became a beacon of hope for millions through the COVID pandemic, and whose six-decade career in high-level public service put him in the room with seven presidents

“An eventful autobiography [and] a classic American story…Gripping.”—The Washington Post

“One of the most consequential and most prominent [careers] in American medicine in the past fifty years.”Jerome Groopman, The New Yorker

Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous – and most revered – doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. ON CALL will be an inspiration for listeners who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of “speaking truth to power,” with dignity and results.

A life lived doing what you love.

If everyone could work doing what they loved to do what a world we would live in. If that work was in service to others it would be even more amazing.

The people who express hate for Tony Fauci should listen/read this book. I know it is not likely, but just imagine if they walked in his moccasins for even half of this book.

I forgot the parts about Ebola and Zika. Nice review of influenza scares from the 1970-90s.

A Public Servant, An Esteemed Doctor, and Scientist

I almost balked at the length of the book, but it reads like a good novel. It’s the story of an incredible life, in an extraordinary time for the world. Dr. Fauci tells his story without denigrating those who held opposing views, and often made his life difficult. The history of the AIDS crisis, and other lesser pandemics, helped me understand how the COVID pandemic was inevitable. This is definitely worth reading, regardless of your opinion of his work.

Honor, Courage, and Commitment

Just wow. What an inspiring story by a truly humble public servant that has given his life to making our country and world a better place. The only sad thing is that it will not be read by those who might have the most to gain from it.

Great biography and review of history

If you have interest in the history of medicine in the last 50 years, this is such a great review of the intersection of politics and medicine mixed with the trials and tribulations of a true public servant!

Fascinating

A fascinating book written primarily from a scientific point of view - translation: heavy on the facts, including source material (which I REALLY liked). But it still includes the human element, giving insights into the man himself, along with behind-the-scenes happenings during some of the most significant health related global events in the last 50 years. Enjoyed it.

Unselfish service

A personal view of an extraordinary yet humble doctor, who has dedicated his life and career to this country through service to others. Enjoyed the telling of his story in his own words.
