#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In her “vulnerable, tender, and infinitely inspirational” (Oprah Daily) memoir, the first Black woman to ever be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States chronicles her extraordinary life story.

“A billowingly triumphant American tale.”—The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice)

A
NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW AND NEW YORKER BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

With this unflinching account, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson invites listeners into her life and world, tracing her family’s ascent from segregation to her confirmation on America’s highest court within the span of one generation.

Named “Ketanji Onyika,” meaning “Lovely One,” based on a suggestion from her aunt, a Peace Corps worker stationed in West Africa, Justice Jackson learned from her educator parents to take pride in her heritage since birth. She describes her resolve as a young girl to honor this legacy and realize her dreams: from hearing stories of her grandparents and parents breaking barriers in the segregated South, to honing her voice in high school as an oratory champion and student body president, to graduating magna cum laude from Harvard, where she performed in musical theater and improv and participated in pivotal student organizations.

Here, Justice Jackson pulls back the curtain, marrying the public record of her life with what is less known. She reveals what it takes to advance in the legal profession when most people in power don’t look like you, and to reconcile a demanding career with the joys and sacrifices of marriage and motherhood.

Through trials and triumphs, Justice Jackson’s journey will resonate with dreamers everywhere, especially those who nourish outsized ambitions and refuse to be turned aside. This moving, openhearted tale will spread hope for a more just world, for generations to come.

Truly enjoyed this Memoir…was sad when it ended

Heard about this memoir when Justice Jackson was on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast. What a remarkable woman! Loved hearing her story and just loved her honesty about the realities of being a black woman, mother, wife, daughter, friend all while working towards her own destiny. I’m so glad to have learned so much about her and so thankful she sits on the highest court in our country

Her version

I don’t believe it was completely factual. The women’s movement started in the early 60s if not before and gave the strength to all the groups regardless of sexual preference, Creed color, etc.. I would visit UC Berkeley several times in my young life and witnessed riots for immigrants riots for color for women at various times it helped me to choose my path and at this time I want people to realize or to know that I walked that walk and talked that talk for decades later. I don’t want to become invisible.

Amazing individual

Justice Jackson’s story of her drive and her legal career was excellent. Her story of her husband and family was also very compelling and one of my favorite aspects of the book. Her narration was perfect. The only part that got a bit tedious was her high school experience with speech tournaments. The only other thing I would say is that at times, it seemed very braggadocio. The author is indeed remarkable so I say that with a grain of salt. That is why the part about her family challenges helped balance out the narrative. Justice Jackson has such a great group of longtime friends so she must be someone with whom others connect deeply. I’d love to meet her.

An incredible life!

Ketanji Brown Jackson is one of my contemporaries. I appreciate her story as if it were written by a family member or close friend. Black women have many demands on their time and talent yet must balance things like most women. If we don't find inventive ways to exist and prosper in spaces not intended for us, no one bats an eye. It is just assumed that she could not cut it. I thank Ketanji for her determination not to quit. She has lived a purposeful life of integrity and beauty.
