About this listen

Jason Burke was a man hiding from himself in a small cabin high in the American Rocky Mountains when his simple, quiet life was shattered one night by what he first assumed was an aviation mishap. But when he investigates the crash, what he finds will yank him out of his self-imposed exile and thrust him into a world he could have never imagined. He suddenly finds himself trapped on a damaged alien spacecraft and plunged into a universe of interstellar crime lords and government conspiracies, along the way meeting strange new friends… and enemies. As he struggles to find his way back home he is inexorably drawn deeper into a world where one misstep could mean his death. Or worse. He desperately wants to get back to Earth, but it may be the end for him...or is it just the beginning?

This was a great fun sci-fi story. lots of action, characters were good. The story line was even pretty good.

Any additional comments?

This was a entertaining story. I can say that it is definitely a story that I will listen to again. If you like FireFly, Guardians of the galaxy ,The Martian. You will enjoy this story. check it out.

I was drawn to this book by the audio sample of sarcastic and wisecracking "synthetic" talking to the main character after his abduction and thought that it might be a sample of how the whole book would feel. Unfortunately it was not.

This is a decent book with what should be interesting characters and a reasonably interesting plot. It starts like many current sci-fi books with a "crashed" spaceship and a human finding himself flying through space, much to his initial disbelief and unhappiness. Where it (thankfully) differs from others is that the human does not find himself heading some alien naval fleet or commanding some ancient "intelligent" space ship, but rather finds himself in a much more human and complex situation where he does not know what is true and what is false, who is lying to him and who is not. Once you get beyond the "human aboard alien starship" device it is very easy to see the situation as one that is both reasonable and extremely dangerous.

Why, then, only 3 stars for the story? For one, there is not nearly enough character development, perhaps due to the brevity of the book. For another, the second half of the story proceeds in a very predictable way with the ending being almost too obvious. For a third, the solutions to the very real problems turn out to be far too simple and, because of that simplicity, far too unbelievable.

Still, it is not too bad, although I do not expect to get the next book. I would have given it 3 1/2 stars had I been able to, but settled on 4 as a whole due to the excellence of the narration and the cleverness of some of the story.

Any additional comments?

This is the first book of a series. It starts with the desperate adventures of one man and goes on to space opera on a bigger scale, with lots of space ships and aliens. There is a powerful robot with a mind of its own.

New technology; new alien characters; unique conflict; decisive treatment of social and moral values; a happy ending with an opening for the sequel - Uncomplicated SciFi!
A very entertaining and straightforward story with no lengthy side trips or overly deep explanations. It left me feeling good and wanting more. There are several more books in the series. If Audible will make them available, I will buy them.

Where does Omega Rising rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I liked this book; actually the entire series is awesome. This is just fun to read (listen); the characters become real, I find myself laughing out loud at times over their antics and personalities. This book is not going to change your life or provide profound meaning to your view of the world; it will entertain you and make you care about the characters. I wish Audible would publish all seven books, I'd buy them all at once and have a listening marathon. Did I mention that I have read the kindle versions of these and bought the audio version as well? I like something to take my mind off of running and this book more than did the job. Enjoy.

What did you like best about this story?

It holds your attention from beginning to end. It makes you laugh and leaves you wanting more.

Have you listened to any of Paul Heitsch’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

nope

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

For those of you that liked Guardians of the Galaxy, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Just plain fun

I enjoyed the book - it was a fast read, fast and entertaining. I'll probably listen to it again. The narration was great.

Three things bothered me:
1. The grammar needed help. The poorly constructed sentences bugged me and pulled me from the engaging space story back to Earth where I wished that Joshua would have hired a good editor.
2. Overall the book was delightful yet a bit sterile. It could have used more descriptions of the ships and aliens to help me picture them - although Crusher was both vivid and memorable.
3. The book could have used more science. I like science in my science fiction.

I'm glad I listened to the book, It was fun. I'll probably listen to Book 2; I hope the grammar gets better.

This was fun but could use an edit

I liked the story and narration, good characters and best of all it's not a intersteller war story. I would love to continue the series in audible format but i can't find audio version for later books

I'm hooked, more audible please

easy. simple, mostly entertaining albiet predictable. it's not intelligent, deep or exceptionally creative, but it is fun enough that I'll try the second book. I'll give it a GO if you don't expect something like the expansion series of the like.

simple but fun enough
