Acerca de esta escucha

The year is 2650. Seventy-five years ago, an alien fleet attacked Earth. Without warning. Without mercy. We were not prepared. Hundreds of millions perished. Dozens of cities burned. We nearly lost everything. Then the aliens abruptly left. We rebuilt. We armed ourselves. We swore: never again. But the aliens never came back. Until now. With overwhelming force the aliens have returned, striking deep into our territory, sending Earth into a panic. Our new technology is useless. Our new ships burn like straw. All our careful preparations are wasted. Now only one man, one crew, and the oldest starship in the fleet stand between the Earth and certain destruction: ISS Constitution.

Its a good hamburger but not steak

Predictable story line but fun, well written and well performed. It could be the base for a good series.

Fun

Silly sci-fi confection, but fun nonetheless. They owe BSG and Star Trek some idea attribution!

solid book, enjoyed the read

the book felt a little slow in the beginning, maybe it would feel different in a printed version. however, once I got into the thick of the action it was quite enjoyable. if you enjoy this genre of book, you will like this one. wasn't the best I've read / listen to, but it definitely held my attention and I enjoyed it. looking forward to the next book in the series.

Battlestar Galactic ... again?

The initial story arc and characters could be straight out of battle star galactica, the second one, not the first. Very similar situation right down to the drunk of a first officer. Not judging, just not original until about 2/3 of the way through when the writer starts heading off in an original direction.
Bear with it this may be going somewhere...
Great voice performance, as it should be the narration almost disappears into the background and the story tskes over.

Stolen ideas detract from excellent writing.

The writing was excellent, but was overshadowed by how many characters and plot points seemed to be ripped directly from the Battlestar Gallactica reboot from the early 2000s. An old enemy shows up and takes humanity by surprise, the modern military isn't prepared, and only an aging relic of a bygone era crewed by misfits can stand up to it. Oh, and guess what? The aliens had help from the inside, well intentioned though it may have been. There is an old warhorse captain that has somewhat fallen out of favor with command, a drunkard XO, etc. etc.

Overall, it's a good military space opera, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I wasn't trying to figure out how the publisher let Nick Webb get away with what at times seems like a direct rip-off of someone else's intellectual property. I intend to go through the rest of the series because I suspect the BSG parallels will diminish going forward, and I really do like the writing style. I would have rated the story 5 stars if I didn't have that 'I feel like I've been here before' feeling for the first 3 hours.

Very good derivative TV sci-fi romp

Battlestar Galactica + Star trek + Independence day + the Orville + ender's Game

this is like fanfiction written by a middle school kid who loves all of these shows and is actually a really good writer. the thing is you have to realise going into this it has 100% derivative. 100%. there is not a single original idea or scene or event or character here.
and that's okay!
it's incredibly fun despite a lack of originality. I mean even the ending is groan-worthy in the same way that the old series was with Leonard nimoy and William shatner.
but that's what makes this such a fun story. I relish the love that went into it drawn from so many different shows.
it works. it just works and I don't begrudge Nick webb for doing it this way.
this is like the sort of story that boys talk about during lunch. it's almost like the classic USS Enterprise versus a star destroyer battle. I mean it's not that blatant there's really nothing from Star Wars here but you get the idea.
I loved every minute of it in the same way that I love the Orville and maybe that show was inspired by this book?

good ole fashion space opera sci-fi.

I'd give it five stars but the truth is, that would take away from its simple, non-pc, non-woke, non-America-bashing construction. If you want to harken back to a simpler time, are not offended by well worn tropes, and just want an easy, relaxation, enjoyable little escape... this book is your gateway drug of choice.

Like a wine from the same region, this has some essence of John Ringo's Live Free or Die / Troy Rising... not in the plot or the voice but.. in the spirit.

highly recommend.

A Fun Space Romp

This is a great start to a great series! Nick Webb creates great, believable characters, if a little bit one-dimensional. This isn’t War and Peace, though, so it’s no biggie. What it is is a story about epic space battles with dozens of ships, overwhelming odds and the indomitable human spirit. Good times!

Low-Tier Excellence

what can i say, the endless juvenile jokes & the overly relied upon technobabble kinda killed it for me but it was overall a GOOD story after finishing all of the books. I’ve definitely read better but again i don’t regret the time i spent. There are tons of sci-fi audio books on here that aren’t even bearable compared to this.
you ever watch a movie and think “hm that was good don’t know if i’ll watch it again though” yeah that’s kinda about it. not bad not great. check out joshua dalzelle, craig alanson, or jack campbell if you haven’t.

Great start to the trilogy

Very good traditional military sci-fi that I really enjoyed, except for cliffhanger ending. The ending is also what I will label a "cheap stunt" by the author, although I won't say more, because it would be a spoiler. A warning to the reader, though - it appears this is the first third of a long book that's just divided in thirds.

Some reviews have whined about a BSG rip-off for the first half of book one. Sure, there are some similarities to BSG, but what sci-fi book doesn't borrow from other sci-fi books. And here, they took good parts from BSG but not the bad parts. Plus, I love BSG, so I love those similarities.

Bottom line: Great character development, great plot, and great narration. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to the other two books in the trilogy.

Update: Having now finished the trilogy, I must say, each book is progressively worse, and I wish I hadn’t wasted my time on these three books.
