A brand-new production of Andy Weir’s modern sci-fi classic, narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton, and featuring bonus content from the writings of Mark Watney.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Wil Wheaton, who has lent his voice to sci-fi blockbusters like Ready Player One and Redshirts, breathes new life (and plenty of sarcasm) into the iconic character of Mark Watney, making this edition a must-listen for both longtime fans of The Martian and new listeners alike.

BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes the following extras:

  • “Diary of an AssCan” - Mark Watney, new astronaut
  • “I Made It!” - A happy letter to Mom
  • “Car Trouble” - A somewhat sad letter to Mom
  • “The Earthling” - A postscript. *Available for the first time in this recording

Featured Article: The 20 Best Survival Audiobooks for the Prepper in All of Us

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Compelling Survival Narrative • Witty Protagonist Humor • Realistic Scientific Elements • Emotional Storytelling

will Wheaton does not even seem to be trying to differentiate characters. the other narrator RC Bray was fantastic!!

the original narrator was best

The first version of The Martian was such an original, compelling story, unlike my usual reading fare, and I will always feel an affinity to it. R.C. Bray WAS Mark Watney. This edition seems to have edited, perhaps to make room for the special features are the end. IMHO, they added nothing to the story. Wil Wheaton is a stellar narrator, but I felt he over-acted this one. Admittedly, I'm a bit biased because the original audiobook was just perfect.

Good, but the original was even better

I don't understand the negative reviews. The quality of the recording sounds fine to me. Wil is a great narrator. It's a different take than Bray's, but it's just as a good. I think Bray does better, or at least more distinct, character voices. It's cool to hear the same story by two fantastic narrators.

Great

RC improved the book's content by vocally embodying the 20th century attitudes ingrained in the original tale: an attitude that is a byproduct of our flailing patriarchal society.

Having heard RC's performance, I was eager to see the movie and enjoy the tremendous improvements that could be (and were) made in the transition to the screen, from flattening of unneeded twists to the rise to deserved prominence of a few female characters who were but paper dolls in the original text.

Wil's performance is a nice change of pace; if you like to hear a variety of Wheaton readings, this is a nice addition to the body of phenomenal works he's already rendered.

Listen to them both :)

like many people The original recording of "The Martian" is what got me hooked on audiobooks. a fabulous story with an awesome narrator it had me hooked immediately. it's set a very very high bar, and unfortunately this one just does not live up to the original.

Wil Wheaton does an excellent job, but there is just something missing from this version.

it is alright

R.C Bray’s version of this was, hands down, my favorite audiobook of all time. Now I can’t find it anywhere. Wheaton does just ok as his voice is just better suited for other work. Seems to childish for me. I understand a contract issue was at fault for not brining back Bray. A serious shane as I would gladly pay $50 or more to get a permanent copy of that.

Contract stuff

An excellent and gripping story. I’d listen to “The Martian” version from audible before the Wil Wheaton one came out and the story got me hooked. When I saw they’d recorded one with Wil I had to listen again.

Gripping Story and Fantastic Narrator!

Honestly, had I not heard the R.C. Bray version I would probably love this. I love Wil as a Narrator and have enjoyed many of his recordings but this one was a miss for me.
I still enjoyed it, but I missed Bray's handling of accents and character voice.
Had this been an ensemble cast, with Wil reading for Watney alone... it just would have been better.

Almost perfect

Loved this movie but the book was better! Actually, had no intention of reading this until I found out the reader was Wil Wheaton, one of my top 3 readers of all time. Author gets pretty technical at times - probably too much for some but he really did his homework to get the science right. If you saw the movie, listen to this book! If you only read the book, watch the movie!

Movie was great, Book was much better!
