This is an amazing story line, so inventive and involving. I found myself completely hooked. Michael Kramer really brings the character to life.
The audible book finished early (about a chapter) so I emailed Audible and they fixed the problem in minutes. Thank goodness, that last 30 mins so set the scene for Book 2.

Engaging fantasy, adequate narration

This is a good intro to a new trilogy and a new fantasy universe with an interesting magical system. the characters are reasonably well drawn and Sanderson is pretty genre-savvy. the pacing of the book is excellent, and I found the twists quite surprising. Many of the themes are very thoughtful and I welcome his gentle challenge to many of the assumptions that inform orthodox fantasy novels.

The narration is good, though the narrator does choose some pretty stereotypical 'voices' for the villains. This tends to broadcast whether the character in question is a 'goody' or a 'baddy', which is disappointingly simplistic and unnecessary. On the other hand the characters unmistakeably wear white hats or black hats and there are no shades of grey in there. Nice to have a female protagonist who is somewhat complex as well as being kickass.

Captivating

Well written and narrated. Compelling story that makes you think you have all the answers....of course you don't.

Story... addictive, and even though this is a fantasy book it's very grounded and relevant
Characters ... deep and complex
Lore and world building... even better than the story, always leaves you hungry for more

Overall superb, 10/10 would listen again.

<i>Audiobook Review</i>

Whow, this was a whirlwind of a ride, my gang. I started it as one of those meh type things where you're just starting something coz you're curious and well, I'm glad I listened to this audio because wow, what a book.

Michael Kramer did not come to play with us, hey. His narration is clean as hell and whow, he made the whole thing so much better.. Wow. Like, the accents and voices were amazing. I could always tell which character was talking, it never confused me.

The story line is also so interesting and intense. And all the characters are so damn interesting and I love every single one of them (I'm scared my son Spook is going to die becuase he's soft and awkward). Like wow. I finished this hours ago and I am still in shock.

And I wish I had a better way of expressing just how good this book was, but- - IT WAS SO GOOD! I am still recovering!

I can already tell that this trilogy is going to destroy my heart!

One of the best stories ever

It's hard to describe this book, except that between the words and characters crafted by Sanderson and the voice of Kramer you end up with one amazing story. Kramer really breathes life not only into every character in this journey, but the world in which they walk.

Few people will be disappointed with this audio book and even fewer who love this genre.

A great listen and enthralling story

After listening to Brandon Sanderdon's conclusion to the wheel of time series and the storm light archives, I decided to listen to his earlier series. I have to say that this series is a pleasure to listen to. For an epic fantasy series, this world felt original from all the other Tolkienesk fantasy yet did not fall into the darker more gritty worlds other authors tend to go.. The story is surrounded on the success or failure of a grand heist but did go down the ocean elevens heist plot.. The characters were well rounded and their motives makes sense.. Looking forward to listening to the next book..

Good book in general

good books but the performance could be improved. More different voices...
The start is quite slow and unattractive but when you get deep into the story it becomes very interesting.

Just incredible

I’ve listened to a fair share of audiobooks but this is on my top three.
Incredible performance, story, pacing.
I couldn’t find an engrossing book for the longest time and this book broke my slump.
A must read if you’re in a reading slump and are looking for a book that will leave you fully satisfied.
Cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
