Publisher's summary

A house of haunted history and ill temper. Make yourself at home in this beguiling novel of love, magic, and danger by Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Charlie N. Holmberg.

Rhode Island, 1846. Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay. Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice. With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave. Ever.

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance. She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums. She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally. To do that, she’ll need to move in, too.

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult. She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated. And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within.

Critic reviews

“A trio of narrators makes this lighthearted historical fantasy with touches of mystery and romance a delight.… Graham Halstead portrays Merritt, a young writer who is somewhat naïve and endearing. Amanda Leigh Cobb brings in Hulda, an employee from the Boston Institute of Keepers of Enchanted Rooms, who seems to be a stern young woman, at first. Nicholas Boulton presents Silas, an Englishman who transforms into the villain of the story. As the narrators hand off chapters to each other, they keep the story's tone and mood consistent.”AudioFile Magazine

“Filled with delightful period details and artfully shaded characters, this whimsical, thoughtful look at magic and its price is the perfect read for a cold fall night.”Publishers Weekly

“Holmberg…has a deft hand portraying internal emotional responses…Keeper of Enchanted Rooms combines lighthearted entertainment and nail-biting excitement.”Historical Novels Review

Entertaining, light romance, good plot twists

I don't know about you, but I make star reviews to remind myself which authors and narrators I do and don't like. I don't like being required to leave a text review in order to leave a star review. I hope Audible fixes this soon.

Fun and adorable

The narrator changed every other chapter so it was a bit confusing to recognize which character was which at first. However that style also provided me with a different interpretation to each character. So it made it a little more fun. It took a second for me to get into the book, but after the third chapter I was hooked. I recommend this book as a wholesome magic/ghost story/unexpected romance!

Magical Love Story

Charlie N. Holmberg has an excellent grasp on period pieces and the language of magic. This is not my first book I’ve read by the author. Another great series is “The Plastic Magician” in the Paper Magician series. This story did not disappoint either. I love the characters that came from two different worlds but yet were so much alike. Hulda, the Keeper of Enchanted Rooms is assigned to the magical Whimbrel House to tame it. Merritt the new owner who inherited the home is not quite sure if he wants the home and all its magic. But as the story unfolds the house has a mind of its own. I highly recommend this book for high school and collegiate English and writing courses.

Top notch narrating and an entertaining story

I really liked this, one of CNH’s better works—appealing characters, several twists, a nice little romance, and one of the creepier villains in recent memory. Along with a great 3-person narration. Looking forward to the sequel.

Very much enjoyed

I bought this book because it was on sale and showed up at the right time. Stories of magic do not usually interest me and I did not like the beginning much, yet it kept my interest. At some point I realized I was really enjoying the characters, the relationships, and the skillful way it was written. The people felt real and their emotions and reactions were so well described that those felt real also, I love that it was a ‘clean’ story, with enough spark to be exciting but without crudity. It was very well read also. I am looking forward to book #2!

Endearing tale with levity

Keeper of Enchanted Rooms is a fun listen. I enjoyed the unfolding of the story--a ghosted house, magic, romance, and suspense make for an entertaining story. The pace is steady as the story quickly unfolds.
