About this listen

Meet Clytemnestra, the most notorious heroine of the Ancient World.

You are born to a king, but marry a tyrant. You stand helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore and you comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own. You play the part, fooling enemies who deny you justice. And slowly, you plot.

But when your husband returns in triumph, what then?

Acceptance or vengeance—death follows both. So you bide your time and force the gods' hands in a wretched game of vengeance. You know queens: they are either hated or forgotten. And you already know which option suits you best. Circe meets Cersei Lannister in Clytemnestra, the powerful retelling about the most notorious heroine and favorite villain of the Ancient World who reined as an unforgettable and ruthless queen, faced the men who wronged her, and forged a treacherous path to ensure everyone would know her name.

Clytemnestra done right

I have consumed all the modern retellings of ancient Greek stories, many of which focused on the house of Atreus. I would have thought this story was overdone, and the new author was late to the game and likely wouldn’t provide anything new. WRONG. I was very impressed with her writing style and storytelling ability. I felt this story was finally given the proper shifted perspective it deserves. All the other retellings I’ve read always missed the mark ever so slightly. But Casati exceeded my expectations and provided a true and fresh feminist retelling. I look forward to her next creation.

Always more to the story

How can a woman endure so much death, heart ache and betrayal yet still go on? Clytemnestra

Enthralling Epic

Clytemnestra was beautifully and exquisitely written, with vibrant and elegant prose. Both emotional, and terrifying at times, this epic does not fail to thrill the senses.

A very enjoyable read

I really enjoyed the story and narrator. Reminded me of Circe. A well written alternative and plausible story of a historical tragedy.

Compelling

Beautifully written and narrated, this is the story of a girl who grows up to be queen in a time when women are meant to be subservient. A great companion to The Odyssey but told from a woman’s POV.
