Inspirational

I'm a life coach, therefore I'm constantly seeking useful materials on how to comprehend psychology and mental health. This is a wonderful reference book that includes journaling activities, an explanation of various trauma responses, and various coping mechanisms. The level of detail provided in this book amazed me.

This is a great place to turn for advice and guidance on many facets of mental health. This book is filled with a wealth of useful knowledge that may be applied in several contexts. Given the cost, it offers fantastic value. Having this book on hand is an excellent idea. Unquestionably a recommended read!

Great Book

I really enjoyed the audio book.
Not very big into them but the narration was perfect voice and speed!
Story line gave a great overall prospective for getting involved with your mental health as a starting point! Has a ton of great references at the end to further help you on mental health journey!

I learned a lot from it. If you have trouble managing your emotions and relationships, this book can assist. I didn't believe this book would assist me, but it did. It's a pretty fantastic one to learn from.

Good for those willing to do the work involved.

'I Don't Know Why I Act Like This' begins with an exploration of our emotions and how we can feel many of them all at once, bringing to mind Mary Tyler Moore attending the funeral of Chuckles the Clown. At first, she's solemn and respectful, but when the minister mentions other characters on the kiddie show (such as Mr. Fee-Fi-Fo, Billy Banana, and Aunt Yoo Hoo), a laugh bubbles forth. As the minister shares what Chuckles said whenever he'd fall down ("I hurt my foo-foo"), Mary starts to lose it. By the time he delivers Chuckles' trademark line ("A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants"), she's giggling uncontrollably. And yet, when the minister invites Mary to go ahead and laugh because Chuckles would've wanted her to, she breaks down into uncontrollable sobs. So goes our emotions. We can't help how we feel, but we need to learn to control how we deal with them.

Ms. Vanderbilt discusses methods to use in order to take charge of our emotional well-being, such as yoga, journaling, and exercises like gauging our feelings by assigning a color to each of our emotions. While keeping our minds and bodies busy might be practical advice for those trying to cope with moderate anxiety disorders, those suffering from severe depression often find it hard enough to get out of bed, much less to create the initiative to implement such therapeutic behavior.

My overall impression of this book is that it is a well-constructed and beautifully delivered guide for those seeking help for such mental health issues as high anxiety or low self-esteem, but not for those with more serious disorders. Still, for anyone willing to put forth the effort to read the book and implement its strategies, this can be a useful tool in the road to their recovery.
