Publisher's summary

Marc's home from college on break, spending his time laughing about some of the crazy news stories he's found online, and gaming. When a message appears in his line of sight, blocking out absolutely everything else, he nearly freaks out. The message warns that the world has been in a variant Natural Laws beta test for millennia and that it's about to revert to the norms.

Deciding that even if he is insane, it's not going to hurt anything to try to prepare, he settles in to do so. Despite the atrocious lack of skill the System has with the English language, he manages to work his way through enough help files to get a clue of what's coming. After sharing his discovery with a few friends, they all start to prepare together.

Once the change begins, the small group races to create a Safe Zone, an area where monsters will not spawn and where they can gather other survivors in an attempt to rescue as much of the town as possible. Along the way they discover that the new System can award classes that resemble those of the games the group has played, as well as magic for those capable of grasping it.

With monsters spawning throughout the town, everyday animals being mutated into dangerous creatures, and a System that desperately needs English language lessons, they'll do their best to save as many of the local residents as they can.

I would love to see more

Story has a good arch with great narration, I can’t wait to see where the story goes, but the way this book wraps up you can theoretically call it a 1 and done.

Interesting yet kinda boring.

Narration was very good. Story is very detailed. I thought it was interesting enough to keep me listening, but kind of boring. Tho this may just be one of those typical first book setup for better stuff ahead?

I enjoyed it. l

Fairly linear story with decent progression. Easy to listen to. I do wonder why no other town residents resist the main character and his friends being in charge. Not enough internal conflict or politics compared to what I expect life will be like at the end of the world. Everybody just gets along. Still, decent story and I will buy book 2.

It’s a good start

So far so good, overall I think it’s a good start to a new series. Looking forward to the next book.

I read the book before I listened

I like this story. It is unique in it's story and light on superfluous details. It also shows how bad some people can get in a lawless time but you know the good guys are going to win. Though it is a simple story and lacks the gravitas of some books. I don't care. I'm not always looking for heavy reading but enjoy a good story. This fits the bill.

I liked reading the book more than the audio book though. A respectable reader, the narrator didn't quite fit with this book.

Review

This audiobook has a great deal of potential. I like the fact that he didn’t make the characters dumb when the system came. they knew the danger, and they made the necessary steps to protect themselves, and create a safe space for themselves and others. My critiques of this audiobook is that I wish the author gotten more in depth with the magic system. It is probably the weakest part of this audiobook.

When compares to books like, the Land, by Aleron Kong. The first Defier by JF Brink. Primal Hunter by Zogarth. All have a great, story great universe building, but most important have a very in-depth magic system!. Tom Larcombe played it a little bit too safe when it comes to the magic system. The audiobook isn’t bad. They are definitely critiques, but I wanted him to explore more in depth with the magic system.

Captivating!

This was a random buy because of too many credits but it grabbed ahold and drug me inside. Well written and thought out. It's a pleasure from start to finish.

Amazing

I loved this story and I can’t wait for the next in the series the main characters are immature but very relatable and the way the story is told keeps your attention wrapped waiting for each next chapter
