Publisher's summary

Artemus Black doesn't believe in fate...but even a hardened Hollywood PI can question destiny when cases turn ugly.

With an assistant who mocks him relentlessly, an obese cat that loathes him, a romantic life that's deader than Elvis, money problems, booze, nicotine, and anger management issues, how much worse can it get?

The answer is plenty, and Black finds himself in a web of deceit, betrayal, and murder - and bad hair days.

If you love Chandler and Hammett, Black's irreverent nod to the noir classics is sure to draw smiles and keep you listening late into the night.

Cliched to the limit! Deliciously hilarious.

Audible Edition ~ Narrated by R.C. Bray

My second listen! I needed an entertaining and humorous audiobook and this series is perfect!
Clichéd to the limit! Deliciously hilarious.
This uproarious four-book detective bundle is a hoot! Between Detective Black's secretary, the screamingly funny Roxie with her office 🐱 Mugsie, a stray overweight feline, and Black's own lively sarcastic barbs, I laughed out loud throughout. "Our bank account is about as empty as a Kardashian's head." We follow Black as he conducts his investigations and meet some interesting and very quirky characters, making this a must-listen. The vocal presentation is by one of my favorites, R.C. Bray, is brilliant as he brings these bizarre creatures to vivid life. Enjoy! I know I did. Russell Blake, you've given us hours of delightful entertainment and I 👀 forward to many more in this series, I’m begging you, keep narrator Bray. Well worth the credit. So highly recommended, I can't see the top! Epic, I say. EPIC! EPIC! EPIC!

NOTE: After finishing Book 1, do not ask Alexa for a chapter by number. I did and went all over the place. At the time, I blamed it on an Audible glitch but after five more years as a member, I learned that I was the “Glitch Bitch.” 😂

Highly Recommend This Series

The books were good, narrator was great, as usual his range of voices is amazing, you never have to struggle with trying to figure out who is supposed to be talking. RC Bray, in my opinion, is the best in the business.
The humor in the books is literally laugh out loud funny. The author does a terrific job balancing serious and humor. Real life is neither all funny or all serious, many authors do one or the other, I always admire authors who do both.
There were a few errors in book four I feel the editor should have caught. It didn't make any difference to the storyline, it just surprised me that it wasn't noticed. I'm curious to know if it was in the written version and if any others noticed it.
I have to warn people that once you start listening you will not want to stop.

All around great detective stories

Maybe the best detective stories I've heard in years.
Always something happening between the characters to keep your mind engaging the stories.
And those characters are well developed. Good books.

Four Books - Four Fun Hits

I bought this four book set looking for something new. I found it! What a great surprise. The hero of the story is Artimus "Jim" Black, who goes by just Black. A former musician, a schemer who has failed at many businesses, he is a good but pay check to pay check Private Investigator. He is a well liked guy with lots of friends and contacts and a little to much morality in his character to ever become rich. His "receptionist/researcher/side kick" is a much younger woman in her early 20's that we presume really likes Black but has a smart mouth (and mind) that relentlessly "bags" on Black.
All four books (Black, Black is Back, Black is the New Black, and Black to Reality) involve well constructed fast paced FUN and FUNNY listens. If you are a connoisseur of fine Sarcasm you'll find this is definitely the kind of comedy that is heavily woven into the story's narrative. If there is ANY criticism in fact, it would have to be that the assistant, "Roxie" absolutely NEVER has a straight line. All four mysteries are clever and intricate enough to be engrossing without being so complicated it requires 100% of all your attention to hang with it. These are great stories to listen to while doing other things and engaging enough that you don't find yourself looking for gaffs and errors. And of course, R.C. Bray, the narrator is absolutely FLAWLESS. Bray is solidly one of the best voice actors for audio books keeping company with top shelf male actors like Ray Porter, Scott Brick, and George Guidall. Great set of books and a bargain to get them bundled. Get a cup of coffee and sit back for about 29 hours of good story telling.

Great series

If you are a fan of gumshoe noire, then this series will not disappoint. The stories are well written, main characters are a blast. I laughed out loud at the interactions with Stan and Black as well as Roxy,.and the Mugster. R.C. Bray did a phenomenal performance and made you want to keep listening. Get this series well worth a credit.

Classic Detective novels, great novels

Picked this title because it is long (value) and narrated by R.C. Bray (He should receive a lifetime Oscar for his performances). Was not disappointed. The title character is a classic detective with all the cheesy cliche's. The start of the story is not very promising but as the plot develops it keeps getting better. The characters are very believable and easy to follow. Hope Mr. Blake will continue to come up with more material (and let Mr. Bray narrate it ).
