About this listen

Making eye contact with a killer wasn’t exactly how Bradley Danforth had planned to start his day. As an accountant, he craved structure and routine. What he hadn’t anticipated was being part of a real-life murder mystery with him cast in the starring role.

Death and sorrow were part of Max Donohue’s job description, leaving the detective hardened after years on the job. On his latest case, he’s the one stuck protecting the only witness in a sadistic homicide.

One death becomes two...then three. And soon Max and Bradley find themselves playing a deadly game of cat and mouse. Can Max save Bradley from the clutches of a serial killer? Or will the killer finish what he started?

At a Stranger’s Mercy is the first installment of a continuing series featuring the same two characters. It’s a suspenseful murder mystery that depicts detailed crimes, strong language, and adult situations. While this series will include a romance, it’s a slow burn that develops throughout the series.

I loved this

This series must be listened to / read in order.

This is not a romance but there is potential - so much potential.

The mystery had me hooked and waiting for what was going to happen next..

I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book. It is dark and a bit off putting due to the storyline but if you love this sort of story then I highly recommend,

Kenneth Obi as expected did an amazing job narrating this book.

At A Stranger’s Mercy

I struggled at first with the characters in the book, I didn’t find either one particularly likeable. I’m glad I stuck it out as they grew on me. This is not a romance but it ends with the promise of a potential one. With the story, at times the police procedures seemed really lacking. I hope as the author writes this series that portion gets better.

It also took me a few chapters to get into the narration because I’d just listened to multiple books with a female narrator. I thought the narrator did a great job with a lot of different characters. The one thing that bothered me was the pauses. There would be a long pause in the middle of what seemed like a paragraph and then just a follow up sentence. It happened several times.

Overall, really enjoyable and I’ll definitely be listening to the next book!

Acceptable murder mystery.

This was an okay murder mystery. The mystery part of the story was a good whodunit and I didn't guess the killer for my part.
But I had difficulty with the story overall. I didn't find either mc very likable or empathetic.
Bradley was nice but blah. Bradley kept repeating over and over what an a**hole Max was. I didn't find that to be true, he was just blunt and unlikable. There was zero chemistry between the two, even for a very slow burn. I found myself loosing interest which saddens me cause the mystery part had great potential. I am truly not sure if I will move on to the next in series or not.
I did not read this book, I listened to the audible books version, narrated by Kenneth Obi. He's a good narrator, with a very nice voice distinction between characters, which is highly important to me for audio books. His narration was copasetic!

Suspense and intrigue

The narrator has amazing inflection that brings life to the story. This is not normally a story I would pick up and listen to, but I fell in love with the characters.
Bradley sweet with true grit
Max a tough guy who is insanely smart but doenst give himself enough credit.

brand new fan!

I decided to take a chance on a new to me author based solely on the narrator. Courney's storytelling is masterful and I loved the slow build and how the flow of the book took turns you weren't expecting. Obi's performance really brought thecharacters to life and I will never be able to read them without hearing his performance in my mind.

Brittany's words & Kenneth Obi's voice are magical

Bradley was just going to get coffee because he got up early!!! He noticed a stranger in his neighborhood with creepy, evil eyes. Then he gets beat up that night. So now his life is in danger!!! Max is veteran cop whose pretty much seen it all, until now. He volunteers to protect Bradley while trying to find a killer.
Kenneth's voices for Bladley & Max are perfect, especially Max's!!!! It's growly!!! oh & the killer's voice is really creepy!!!! It gave me goosebumps!!!!

great story

At A Stranger's Mercy by Brittany Cournoyer is the first book in a new murder mystery/suspense series, Badge and Bullets. And what an absolutely brilliant beginning it is. Graphic and detailed descriptions make you feel like you are right there besides the characters, like you can reach out and touch the scenes. The characters are well written and make you care about their interactions and their ultimate fate. The romance aspect of this book is very slow burning, but you definitely feel the sexual tension and the building attraction between Max and Bradley. This intriguing and intense story is filled with drama and danger, twists and turns, and mystery and a promise for more fascinating things to come. I can not wait to see what lies ahead for Max and Bradley.

Kenneth Obi does a fantastic job narrating this story and bringing the characters to life. Great job!

A serial killer and lots of blood

This is NOT romance. At least, not until the very end, and even then, it’s a suggestion of romance. This is a murder mystery, with a serial killer and lots of blood. But it’s also the story of two men who meet under less than agreeable circumstances, and slowly learn to at least appreciate each other, and maybe more.

The book navigates between scenes of carnage or police investigations, and more everyday scenes--I loved the details of Bradley’s life with Max. There’s a contrast here that makes the crimes scenes even more gruesome. All those scenes help building Bradley and Max’s characters.

The narrator did a fine job--although I’m not a fan of his Max’s voice, it makes him sound older than he is, and not particularly handsome. Technically, the recording isn’t great though, as we often have the last word of a sentence slightly cut.

There’s no cliffhanger, but if you want to know how Bradley and Max’s relationship develops, you need to read also book 2 AND 3--this one was just released. It’s a very slooooooow burn.

A dark murder mystery!

This is the first book in the series and must be listened to in the series order for maximum enjoyment.

The murder mystery was engaging and compelling.
The plot was solid and the storyline held my interest.
There is a hint at more romance to come in the future books and I'm all for a slow burn romance.

The characters were likeable and well fleshed out. The writing was a bit in the dark side with the gruesome murders and it suited the mood of the story.

Kenneth Obi performed an amazing audio delivery and narration.
