About this listen

In 2000, Rebekah Robertson gave birth to twin boys, George and Harry. But as they grew older, their preferences began to show, and by the age of three it was clear Georgie was drawn to anything that was pretty or had a skirt that could swirl.

Before long Georgie began to insist that she was a girl and became distressed that she had to hide who she really was when she started school. Soon the bullying started, and she would come home in floods of tears, begging her mother to help her.

Rebekah and her husband, conflicted about how to proceed and overwhelmed by fear, united in their determination to help her live freely and fearlessly. To ensure Georgie had access to medical support they sought permission for her to begin puberty-blocking medication. Their case, Re: Jamie, was the start of the long road to justice for transgender children in Australia and became the basis of the 2013 landmark decision to remove the Family Court's jurisdiction.

Georgie would go on to become one of the brightest stars of the Australian youth leadership landscape through her advocacy work. And Rebekah would found Transcend, a support network for transgender kids and their families in Australia.

Part memoir and part inspirational message of hope for those navigating a similar path, About a Girl is a thought-provoking and profoundly moving true story. Above all, it is a celebration of family and the values that unite us all.

New Life

I was not sure about the book with the first chapter but as I listened more and finished the book I thought it was great. Rebekah did a great job raising 2 children that developed into great adults. Hearing how the family dynamics were, how they work through the hard and relentless government bureaucracy is inspiring. Transgender care is new for us in health care and we have questions of how and what to do legally ethical and with compassion. Great book I loved it.

loved every moment

As a trans person in America I love hearing about the stories if other Transgender people like me. This time it was amazing see the struggles through the eyes of the parents and seeing how loved she was.

Now that is what parents should be, not judgemental or ignorant, but loving and allowing of there kids to be themselves.

Loved it. Good for anyone with a young trans child

I really enjoyed this book. The narrator had a soothing voice. My 15 year old grandson is trans and currently on testosterone and period blockers. He didn't know as young as Georgie did though that he was trans.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I am a trans girl. This is an amazing story that encapsulates something for everyone and almost everything for most. I could not stop listening. I've not experienced a book where it was an experience. I cheered, understood and cried. Some tears happy some sad and most for the Entire families enduring spirit. Rebekah is a Mum like no other and Georgie is a leader amongst leaders. You're destined to be enthralled, inspired, Love and care for this family. Rebekah is the Mum I wish I was blessed with. We are Privileged to have her as an Ally.
