King goes full "WOKE"
Reviewed: 09-18-23
It’s sad when your hero’s die right before your eyes. I was a die-hard fan and still know he is likely the best living writer out there. I can almost quote every line from the Dark Tower books and have lots of other King favorites. I say all this to establish I am not a King basher and have defended his work often in the past and recommended him to many. However, King’s wokeness has never been more on display than in this book. And yes, while I understand he is writing about a character from the character’s standpoint, the views held by the character echo Kings own comments and social media. The utter contempt he seems to have for half of the country is heartbreaking. Every person in the book that was stupid and backwards (and evil) was a Trump supporter or did not buy-into everything the government said about COVID. Also, the consistent theme that black people are hated and targeted by all cops is just dangerous.
If by some chance Mr. King reads this, I cry your pardon, but “Wordslinger – You have forgotten the face of your father” and it’s hard to watch as a superfan.

Another great story from Taylor but he can’t keep his politics and anti-God out of his stories. Only the “smart” people or heroes in his stories are left leaning and too smart to believe in a higher power.

Matthew Riker keeps to himself, doesn't cause trouble, and never talks about his past. But after a chance encounter with a woman and a small child on the run, Riker will have to make a choice: use his hard-won skills to protect two innocent victims, or stay in the safety of his quiet life. What follows is an adrenaline-soaked thrill ride that will take Riker on a cross-country chase, through the seedy underbelly of a New York criminal empire, and into the darkest places of the human heart.

Frustratingly Stupid at Times
Reviewed: 10-04-21
Overall a good story and has potential for a series, but if you're expecting a Rapp, Reacher, Harvath, Andreus, etc, forget it. This guy is pretty stupid the entire first half of the book. Like... Oh I just disarmed 2 bad guys trying to kill me and know there are 4 more bad guys out there, I think I'll just through away their guys even though I don't have one. Then, Oh I almost died again and took took people with me from the next set of bad guys, but once again I'm going to through their guns away. Even the victim he is trying to protect calls him out on his stupidity but never seems to learn from it.
I also get so tired of the yarn where we have a reluctant hero because of a promise he made years ago. In this case the promise was not even to a loved one and the author tries to play up this internal struggle but it just falls flat.

Thanks for easing off on the whole Oversite Counsel (OC) drama which has been so over-done in the most recent books. We get it.. The team needs oversite, but the OC doesn't know what's happening on the ground and politics come into play with all decisions. Just let Pike do his job as the Counsel, when they go against him, are always on the wrong side of things.
It was a pleasant reprieve when this book chilled out on all that needless drama. Great book. Love the Pike Logan series overall.

Story
It was to be a simple mission. Nothing more than assessing whether a merchant in the fabled Israeli Diamond Exchange was involved in a scheme that could potentially embarrass the state of Israel. But nothing is ever simple in the world of intelligence, as Aaron Bergman - a former leader of an elite direct action team under the Mossad - should have known. Executing the operation as a contractor, a cutout that gave the State of Israel plausible deniability, he disappears without a trace.

Enough with the Taskforce committee
Reviewed: 08-15-20
It's gets so tiresome that the taskforce oversight committee is always trying to stop Pike and they are always wrong. I know the author is trying to put another lever of pressure the hero must overcome but it is so old and adds nothing to the story.

Any additional comments?
Overall I really like the series, but I have had enough of all the "Oversight" committee drama. It's just old and the same stuff over and over. Also, it if's not the committee it's Pike, Jennifer, Knuckles, or someone whining about why they shouldn't do something or looking for approval to do something. Makes me miss a Mitch Rap or Jack Reacher, someone that can make a decision and just do it without all the ethical melodrama.

Will Robie escaped his small Gulf Coast hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi, after high school, severing all personal ties, and never looked back. Not once. Not until the unimaginable occurs. Unlike the missions Robie undertook in the service of his country, where his target was clearly defined, digging into his father's case only reveals more questions. Robie is drawn into the hidden underside of Cantrell, where he must face the unexpected and possibly deadly consequences of the long-ago choices made by father and son.

Good book, but stop changing narrators
Reviewed: 12-03-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The book is well written as are most of Baldacci's books and the Robie series in particular, but changing the narrator after using McLarty for the first three books is not right to us loyal listeners. It's like going from Roger Moore as Bond to Timothy Dalton. It's a step backwards.
Another issue I have is how stereotypical Baldacci made the people from the South seem. We are not all racist here. In fact I can make the argument it is just the opposite and anyone that has spent much time in different parts of the country would likely back me up. Also, alligators and snakes are not everywhere you walk here either. These assertions may play well for people above the Mason-Dixon line or overseas, but it is not reality.

Story
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Grisham is Back
Reviewed: 11-17-13
Where does Sycamore Row rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
If you liked the classic Grisham like The Firm, and A Time To Kill, you will love this one. It was a great story and follow up for the Jake charter.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The story had a good pace, and even though I anticipated the ending early on, it still kept me interested and engaged.
What about Michael Beck’s performance did you like?
Michael Beck as always had a great performance. Would like to see more of his work outside of the Grisham word of novels.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
As with a Time to Kill, the trial was very moving at the end.

Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

What a Disappointment
Reviewed: 07-20-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I have listened and enjoyed all of the previous books and this one had it moments, but overall it was just an exercise just so I would know where the story is going rather than actual enjoyment. Some to key characters (Tyrion, Daenerys, etc.) were not even in the book and other characters we care nothing about take up hours of time and we still don't care about them.
Bottom line is you have to listen to it, and the last half is MUCH better than the first half, but getting through it at times will be difficult.
