About this listen

#1 New York Times Bestseller * A New York Times Notable Book * An NPR Best Book of the Year

Holly Gibney, one of Stephen King’s most compelling and resourceful characters, returns in this chilling “exploration of grief and delusion, just pure undistilled evil” (New York magazine) as she uncovers the truth behind multiple disappearances in a midwestern town.

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency, hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly Gibney is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just passed away. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny’s desperate voice makes it impossible to turn her down.

Meanwhile, mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are also harboring a shocking, unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie’s disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to…for they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless. Now Holly must summon all of her formidable talents to outthink and outmaneuver these unimaginably depraved and brilliantly disguised adversaries in this chilling and unforgettable masterwork from Stephen King.

I was very excited to read this, but right out of the gate it was extremely preachy. I don't mind a bit of politics, but this was way over the line and very hard to keep listening to. It was also very unnecessary.

Way too left wing, preachy

One of the reasons I read fiction is to escape from the day-to-day grind, chaos, reality.... which includes politics. Everyone has their own opinion about Trump and Covid, I just was disappointed that this book was so littered with it. I think it would have been better if it was Captain Trips instead of Covid, honestly. I was so excited for Holly's story, and I feel let down.

no escape

Holly’s development has been delightful to follow. Pathetic members of a death cult, triggered by the true parts, vomited vile reviews. Ignore them as completely as those folks ignore reality. Mr. King’s fans will enjoy this tale.

Reality . . . Hard To Swallow

Excellent edition to Holly's story. I wish Will Patton had read it but Justine did a fine job. The only gripe would be she made Holly sound younger and a little less neurodivergent,

Every thing Mr King said about anti-vaxxers and covid deniers were things this healthcare worker wishes she could have said to dying patients and their families.

loved the book. loved the politics.

I'm going to try to finish this audiobook! Stephen K. created Holly, but Will Patton gave her life! No disrespect to the narrator, but she's just "flat". I can't get the same pictures in my imagination as with Will P. It's hard to determine if it is a good story or not, but I will keep listening. If this is the last book with her character, it should have been more on point! Also, everyone didn't come here for the political views of Stephen King, I just wanted a good book to listen to. Just my thoughts.

Trying!

The books not bad, but King now seems unable to refrain from talking about COVID and bashing those who aren’t vax’d or Donald Trump. It would be one thing if he merely mentioned once or twice but dedicating entire chapters to discussions about COVID is overkill. It’s unfortunate; he was my favorite author until he couldn’t get past his TDS.

The narrator is subpar. Stick with Will Patton.

Subpar King

This book has awesome narration, the story and characters are really interesting, and the length is just right… A+

Holly is amazing!!!

This book is a detective novel, not a supernatural book. The monsters are human and unlikely which makes them more horrible. This book did creep me out. There was one scene that made me want to scream right along with the victim. I loved the insights into Holly’s life, her relationship with her father and the betrayal she discovered during the events of the novel. It was nice how her predicament mirrored one of her victim’s. This book was scary because if you follows true crime, you know that something this bizarre could really happen.

I’m glad Justine Lupe read this book. She made Holly seem more attractive. I like Will Patton’s reading overall but he made Holly seem unrelate-able to me, almost like her mouth was full of spit when she talked, in the Bill Hodge’s trilogy. I think when he reads, they ought to have a woman read the female parts.

Real Horror

I really enjoyed Holly in the Bill Hodges trilogy. Her quirkiness made me smile and I became an instant fan. Also, having Will Patton as the narrator was the icing on the cake for me. His narration of Holly was perfection. I must admit that I was very disappointed to find that Mr. Patton was not narrating this new book. However, Justine Lupe has turned out to be fantastic in her own Holly way.

I highly recommend this book. Another winner by Stephen King!
