Surprisingly Fun Listen

Would you listen to I Don't Know What You Know Me From again? Why?

Sure! I'd probably take a break for a few months, and, then, re-listen again. I actually listened to one particular chapter several times because I felt connected to Ms. Greer.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I appreciate that Ms. Greer knows what her talents are, who she is, and what she is not good at. When she was talking about not doing Second City, I appreciated her honesty. Not everyone is suited for it event though it seems like a rite of passage for Midwesterners to get into acting. It wasn't needed. She's very talented.

This book is like listening to one of the most talented actresses in Hollywood that nobody knows who happens to be your next door neighbor. I'm a huge fan of Judy Greer - watched every episode of Miss Guided like 3x before it was quickly canceled - so I am fairly biased, but she's just a fun person living a regular life who just happens to be super talented in the acting business.

Useful for Parents, Parents-To-Be, & Non-Parents

What did you love best about Why Have Kids??

As a woman who will one day have kids, I'm very appreciative of this book. I truly enjoy my job and spent years trying to find something substantial that I'd actually want to get an education in. So, I'd hate to think that I have to put my doctorate aside because my future toddler is having a hard time with potty training.

Undoubtedly, my future child will mean the world to me simply because they will be my child, but I now feel and will feel great joy from the career I also have dedicated myself to. Though it's an entirely different types of joy, there's no reason why we can't experience both.

Did Emily Beresford do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The narrator did just fine, but she sounded more like she was giving a lecture, and I couldn't help but think that there were parts where Ms. Valenti was attempting to sound sarcastic or even playful which didn't translate with Ms. Beresford's more straightforward tone. Even still, her performance was pleasant and relaxing for a long commute home.

The Best Type of Advice is Funny Advice!

What did you love best about Love Him or Leave Him, But Don't Get Stuck with the Tab?

Loni is so much fun to listen to that sometimes you forget that you're getting legitimate advice. I thought I was at a comedy show at one point, but she's actually giving real counsel to those who want relationship advice.

What did you like best about this story?

I laughed tons! And I said, "You tell 'em, girl!" about 10 times! I listened to the audiobook in a matter of days because although I'm not a single lady or a person having relationship problems, it's fun listening to people's dirty laundry and then laughing with the advice that goes with it.

What about Loni Love’s performance did you like?

Loni reads the book just like she is as a comedian. I love that!

Any additional comments?

You have to give credits to an entertainer that is in some portions of the book clearly making up a story (and she admits that) and you STILL want to hear more! That's talent!

I Feel Sorry for the Poor Girl, but She's Fun!

What does Julie Klausner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She's reads the book like a woman empowered by her experiences which I appreciate.

I guess I thought from the title that this was gonna be a book where the author explains through her experiences that women have transformed into empowered breadwinners or even incredible housewives or queens of the single life while many (not all) of their male counterparts have essentially become superficial, sissy-pants.

That's not what I listened to though.

What it seemed to be instead was a woman talking about all the love and sex she got from losers who she, in fact, knew were losers from the first moments. She describes one guy, for example, as being "crazy" and so you listen and wait to hear about how crazy the guy is, and all that crazy turns out to be is a jerk. But she sleeps with crazy-jerk multiple times, and then seems to acknowledge her wrongdoing. Then, she seems to blame the guy for being a crazy-jerk.

I'm not saying I don't have my stories with guys who turned out to be jerks, but I will say that the moment I uncovered that he was a jerk, I did not give the guy seconds. Forgive me for having a shamefully, self-righteous moment right now, but to stop certain men from being sappy, criminal, unemployed, weird, crazy, jerks then you have to stop sleeping with them. Instead, give the strong, unique, sane, kind, employed, upstanding citizen a chance instead.

I'd also like to acknowledge that I'm aware the author is attempting to inform us about the things she's learned from such experiences, but I can tell from this read, that this author is indeed intelligent. Just, perhaps, easily succumb to her physical needs. If I could simplify this book into a phrase it would be:

Ignore the selfish jerks. No seriously, ignore them. Even when you physically crave them, just don't give them your time 'cause it will eventually turn out bad.

Read the book, and STILL LOVED the audiobook!

Would you consider the audio edition of Bossypants to be better than the print version?

I'm not going to say that the audiobook was better than the print version, but there's nothing like hearing Tina tell her own story! And the clips of SNL just make everything even better!

Perhaps this doesn't matter to most, but I appreciate that Tina still managed to tell her whole life story and, yet, only minimally talked about her husband and children. Sometimes you can say a lot with every little if you do it right.

honest, funny, and goal-oriented

What about Aisha Tyler’s performance did you like?

Sometimes you listen to comedians do their own audiobook, and you'd almost swear they were reading each word one-by-one articulating harshly. Not Aisha. She reads like this is her story and so every word naturally flows ... with a comedic twang!

Any additional comments?

The self-inflicted wounds probably aren't what you're thinking. They're wounds we all cause ourselves, not extreme disasters. Instead, Aisha mixes funny and life into one and makes it instructive ... But the best part is it doesn't FEEL instructive - just like fun!

I'm Hooked on Mindy!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I think I picked up this book just looking for the thoughts from that girl from the office, and I feel like I made a new best friend. She's funny. She's insightful. She's kinda like me - only not. Which made this book enjoyable.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)?

I couldn't help be laugh when she said the word "excrete" when she was talking about her friend's fantasy of having a passionate night with a sexy stranger without any undies on. I was thinking the exact thing at the exact moment she said it, only laughing! Good times.

Which scene was your favorite?

There were many favorite scenes. Perhaps may favorites were when she described the different periods of self-growth in her life with different groups of friends. Nothing spectacular about it, but maybe, that's what I identified with most.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I smiled a lot. Ms. Kaling is not as good as other comedians at reading her own writing, but somehow, that seemed appropriate. She still had a great comic appeal, and she seems sometimes to tell a joke while not telling a joke at all. Since I listened to this on my commute into work and sometimes while exercising, I sometimes felt a sense of relief and calmness throughout my body after listening to her which I appreciate. Some chapters I listened to multiple times!

One Comedian's Life Can Be Interestingly Complex!

If you could sum up Attempting Normal in three words, what would they be?

honest ... complex ... informative

What aspect of Marc Maron’s performance would you have changed?

Mr. Maron reads a little fast. Perhaps that's how he does his stand-up so maybe I'm the silly one judging him on how he does his regular routine with a unique comedic timing. Yet, I felt every chapter was genuinely something he endured through his life. Perhaps, he simply read with genuine passion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't want to listen to it all in one sitting only because I'm a commute-driving/daily workout audiobook listener who works an already overly stimulating job, and this book was quite a lot in one sitting. However, Mr. Maron was fascinating in pieces! For those who have less stimulating lives, this audiobook will really get you thinking.

Any additional comments?

The lives of comedians are very perplexing to me, and yet, somehow I always wanted to know more about them. Mr. Maron did just that! While telling us all about his life, he told me about the lives of the best comics, and I appreciated that. But if Mr. Maron has any other books, I'll definitely get them, but it'll be in book-form - words on paper - that is.

Sometimes You Gotta Laugh!

What did you love best about Dad Is Fat?

If you've ever heard an audiobook read by the author, especially one about their own life, it can sometimes seem annoying. Like they're trying to make you think what they think is the right way - the normal way. Jim Gaffigan doesn't do that. All he does is tell you about himself, and, maybe, some others like him, and I love that! His imperfections and all are personal, informative, and funny - True Gaffigan!

The other great thing is he reads his book just like his act only slightly quieter and calmer which makes it enjoyable listening to it on my commute. I'm sure the drivers next to me think I'm crazy cracking up laughing in my car at such calm words.

I'm not a parent, and I still found this hilarious and calming!
