good book, though not as expected.

I enjoyed the book after I was able to disconnect it from the tv series in my head. while the book and show shair parts of the story, they are very different.
overall, the book is good though it has a low chance I'll go back to reread/listen.

Story
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

The client is paying a crazy sum - if the job is clean. That’s not going to happen. Instead, the galaxy’s unluckiest crew of outlaws will have to put all their resources into salvaging what they can from the job. Even if it’s only avoiding blame for the fallout.

well that's a story about a complete Mary Sue.
Reviewed: 04-13-24
if you like a main that is the best at everything all the time and the only flaw is he can't use the same power as others because he has a more powerful magic no one else even knows of...
if you like a main that is stronger, faster, smarter, tougher, luckier, and all around better then everyone before getting a broken powerful power set...
this Mary Sue story is for you. it's a simple story with easy comprehension. before the first half the book out 'hero' goes from almost as strong as higher level characters to the strongest man in town. maybe by the 2nd book he'll be standing on gods... not that I'm going to bother trying to sit through another of these... soo drawn out trying to be a LitRPG stuck on the game style, been done better in other books and been done worse in some books... so it's ok. mid rate story overall, better only because the narrator reading it is good at his job!

It also includes the bonus Hell for the Holidays, a 24/7 Demon Mart Christmas special. Lloyd Wallace is the most clueless crossing guard the intersection of hell and earth has ever seen. So clueless, that he doesn't even realize the beer cave in the corner store where he works is the gateway to hell.

the author has a weird fadination with a teens genitals... every interaction seems to be rated by how hard it makes the MC..
Reviewed: 11-19-23
I don't have much to say, the MC is written like a horny 15 year old zapp brannigan minus the confidence and charisma. there is a decent story happening in the background; but the MC can't think of anything other than how hard he is in any situation. on one paragraph he thinks about what kind of 'chup' he has 3 different times... full chub, partial chup, no chub. then never uses that descriptor again, moving on to hardon and tent poles, and 'ya know what's. the hole time the MC is written as a sloppy teen and it's give creeper feels; even if he is 20 something per the short back story, it doesnt read that way.
then there is the introduction of a redemption arc near the end of the first part ... that the MC rejects.. over and over untill 'God' threatens to kill his cat.. then there's forced redemption arc, by the big 'G' threatening to kill his cat, that feels more like whipping boy with a hard on. making it strange things that get me hard while God watches and makes me work out so I look better arc.
never any actual character development, just worse and worse events he can't walk away from or God will kill his cat.. then start on his family and his crush.
it's rough...

where to even start?
all the female presenting characters are written as Brats or jarjar binx in bondage... it's super fetishized and not in a healthy way.
Everything is just a wish.com edit of a better source slapped together in a facade of story.
one note is generous for describing each character, it's just hard to hear the same fight over and over.
she is really good with a bow, it has so many holes in it but it's barely noticed.
he takes a while to cast but it's lightning... that works best on little things.
I swing my huge 6ft blade and get hurt then heal and win the fight with my hard to lift 6ft blade. oh look at my 6ft blade, does it match my muscles.... so big, I can barely hold it. 6ft blade.
over and over and over.
definitely going for the refund.
