Kind of ick
Revisado: 03-13-25
I might have enjoyed this more 20 years ago, but now having learned about coercive control and various other manifestations of abusive relationship, this one just made me uncomfortable.
Too big of an age gap between the male and female protagonists. Male MC is at times way too controlling of the female MC. The male MC can physically dominate the female MC, which is also ick. Two subplots involve underage characters as inappropriate objects of interest to older characters.
I know all these things happen in real life, but they are not what I read romance novels for.
However, narrator Roslyn Landour can apparently do no wrong, and even her Russian accents were outstanding.

Pride and Prejudice has delighted generations of readers with its unforgettable cast of characters, carefully choreographed plot, and a hugely entertaining view of the world and its absurdities. With the arrival of eligible young men in their neighbourhood, the lives of Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters are turned inside out and upside down.

Excellent narrator for a timeless classic
Revisado: 09-03-24
I absolutely love this book, which I have read in print countless times since I was a preteen. I was very concerned to find a good narrator to listen to read it, not some famous actor or actress to distract me, but just a nice solid reliable narrator to read the book.
This narrator did a very good job. For all I know, she is a famous actress somewhere, but for my purpose she was an anonymous voice who pronounced everything correctly and differentiated the character voices sufficiently that I knew who was talking when.
I'm almost sad I've finished this listen-- it's like saying goodbye to beloved family.

I gave the narrator a chance
Revisado: 08-25-24
It took me a while to get used to this narrator. I stopped and started the book several times, but around the 4th story, that faded and I could listen and enjoy.
Neat stories in a different culture, familiar and unfamiliar monsters, excellent action scenes. I think these Czech authors do an awesome job of keeping to the spirit of MHI whilst providing their own cultural spin. Very cool.

It’s not easy serving Chernobog, the God of Destruction, Darkness and Death…especially during the holidays; and especially when you’re out of eggnog and one of your pesky, freeloading mythic creatures has eaten your last cookie. Roman would like nothing more than to be left alone, but when a wounded boy stumbles into his yard and begs for sanctuary, Roman takes him in. Now elite mercenaries are camped out on his property, combat mages are dousing the house with fire, and strange priests are unleashing arcane magic.

Excellent novella
Revisado: 08-14-24
I really enjoyed that this book flushes out a recurring character from the Kate Daniels series.
it's a new setting, it's very engrossing and evocative, and it brings deeper glimpses into familiar characters.
The narrator is a delight, and when I finish this review, I'm going to go see what else he has narrated and add it to my wish list!

Too much exposition
Revisado: 07-11-24
The story and the premise are so promising, but I am so bored with this book.
Too much of the exposition comes as conversations between 2 or more characters. Dialogue scenes get way too long, so I lose track of what's going on.
There are some vivid and engrossing action scenes, but most of the action is delivered as characters talking through and revealing to each other what they're about to do, and then we jump ahead to after they've already done the thing. Too much tell, not enough show.

Historia
In the near future, a fluke of quantum mechanics renders Nat Morgan utterly forgettable. No one can remember he exists for more than a minute after he's gone. It's a useful ability for his career as a CIA agent, even if he has to keep reminding his boss that he exists. Nat's attempt to steal a quantum-chip prototype is thwarted when a former FSB agent, Yelena Semyonova, attempts to steal the same technology for the Russian mob.

Good premise; I got bored
Revisado: 06-22-24
I'm not sure what it is about this book that lost my attention. It has a lot of good qualities. Maybe it was the writing style or the narration that lost me? I did push on through and finish it whilst I was doing chores and listening to it on 1.5 speed. It's fine.

Lost their spark
Revisado: 05-27-24
Although I quite enjoyed the first several books in this series, this one does not keep the promises made in the previous books.
Less fun, less sexy, more of Veronica"s boring activism and angst, less of Stoker (the best character in the series).
Boring and preachy.

Sarah Calhoun is the 15-year-old daughter of the Elector Andrew Calhoun, one of Appalachee's military heroes and one of the electors who gets to decide who will next ascend as the Emperor of the New World. None of that matters to Sarah. She has a natural talent for hexing and one bad eye, and all she wants is to be left alone - especially by outsiders.

Jarring Worldbuilding
Revisado: 04-27-24
Every time I start to get into the story, there's some detail in the background world building that jars me out of a willing suspension of disbelief.
This is an alternative history, and I understand that alternative histories will cast historical people to play different roles than they did in history. However, Butler's versions of some historical people are so far from reality, I don't see why he didn't just make up characters to fill these roles.
Having studied the historical people extensively, for me the alternative versions are too unrealistic. The creatures and magic are fine. What Butler does with Franklin, Penn, etc... too bizarre to believe.

MC is so annoying
Revisado: 04-18-24
I'm halfway through this book, and it is so annoying. Too often the plot moves forward because the main character is dumb and makes bad decisions. Most of the supporting cast, however, are perfectly competent and interesting characters.
The narrater does a good job, but I have the same frustration here is I do in the orphan x books. His narration is so desperate, so fraught, that it makes the main character seem desperate and fraugth the whole time. This is also stressful for me is a listener in that the narration is always edge of my seat, even though what's happening in the minute usually is not. The over-fraughtness of the narration, although can be very dry and subtle, undermines any potential suspense within the story. Everything's tense, therefore nothing is tense.
If the main character were a real person living in real America in the 2000s, the man would have seen an action movie. The man would not be so completely clueless about what's going on in the world.

Historia
For 4,000 years, the size and vitality of cities, economies, and empires were heavily determined by infection. Striking humanity in waves, the cycle of plagues set the tempo of civilizational growth and decline, since common response to the threat was exclusion — quarantining the sick or keeping them out. But the unprecedented hygiene and medical revolutions of the past two centuries have allowed humanity to free itself from the hold of epidemic cycles — resulting in an urbanized, globalized, and unimaginably wealthy world.

Inconsistent
Revisado: 03-25-24
This book is a mix of interesting history of plagues and pandemics, and of illogical conclusions about the messages we should take away from them.
I gave up a chapter 8, at which point the illogic was overwhelming the history.
