Story
Julia Ames, after a youth marked by upheaval and emotional turbulence, has found herself on the placid plateau of mid-life. But Julia has never navigated the world with the equanimity of her current privileged class. Having nearly derailed herself several times, making desperate bids for the kind of connection that always felt inaccessible to her, she finally feels, at age fifty seven, that she has a firm handle on things. She’s unprepared, though, for what comes next.

Mommy issues ad nauseum
Reviewed: 07-05-24
This book got great reviews and I just don't get why. It amounts to an 18 hour apology for the very unlikeable heroine's bad behavior. She betrays her mother, cheats on her husband, abandons her son, ghosts her friend etc., etc. But its not her fault really because she had a hard childhood. Well, not really that hard. She had a mother who was less affectionate and supportive than she should've been, Really? Is this the snowflake generations' version of midlife crisis? A tedious, self righteous narrator with a meandering plot and only one really great character who we see briefly at the beginning and the end of this tortuous tale (ie the friend she ghosted).
Don't waste your money or your time on this one.

His name was Feliks. He came to London to commit a murder that would change history. A master manipulator, he had many weapons at his command, but against him were ranged the whole of the English police, a brilliant and powerful lord, and the young Winston Churchill himself. These odds would have stopped any man in the world - except the man from St. Petersburg.

Slogged through twelve chapters but just couldn't finish it. No suspense, no real plot drama just a whole lot of psycho babble and a really uncomfortable, inappropriate "romance." Yuk

Really disappointed by the obvious, crude plot of this book. Shalini Boland usually delivers much more nuance and sophistication. Hate to leave a less than stellar review as I am a fan of this author but this is way below par.

What a wonderful course! Professor Vandiver is a joy to listen to. Blessed with a mellifluous voice, she brings a depth of knowledge and genuine passion that makes her lectures pulsate. She is a deft instructor, sharing so many insights in such a short time that there is simply never a dull moment. I was so sorry for the course to end that I immediately bought her lecture on the Illiad and am enjoying it every bit as much. Let's hope she presents many more courses.

She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, an addictive thriller.
