Wait

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Not now. Wait until at least one more book in the series is ready then by all means get it. This one is mainly just a transition to the next phase of the larger story.

Where does Nemesis Games rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Pretty high, the story is solid and Jefferson Mays does an excellent job narrating, making none of the mistakes that can pull you out of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that we get to see a bit more of the major players' backstories and that they're given room to grow by being separated through much of the book.

Which scene was your favorite?

Laughed out loud when our favorite foul mouthed politician was given a pet name.

Any additional comments?

This is my favorite series, every book is different, I never know where they're going to take the story next, but wherever it goes, I can be sure I'll enjoy the ride. And Audible - if you're paying attention, maybe think about going back to the previous volume and having Mays do an alternate narration - I'm sure I won't be the only one to buy it.

Unique direction with enhanced character depth

Nemesis Games is James A Corey's 5th Expanse novel. While the 1st three installments formed an integrated trilogy, the 4th focused on just one of the new worlds created by the trilogy. Rather than continue to focus outward, this time out Corey stays closer to home with a Belter splinter group attempting to stop migration through the ring based on a belief that with so any new worlds available, the future for Belters and their unique role in the solar system ecosystem looks bleak. At the same time, Holdren's crew takes care, individually of personal business while their ship is being repaired.

Little new sci-fi elements relative to earlier installments are introduced. The main focus is on the intersecting solar politics that Corey does so well at depicting. At the same time, this tale provides extensive background on each of Holdren's crew which gives valuable insight into each character's development. Jim is also maturing, becoming more comfortable in his role, along with an expectation that his crew will enlarge. The story ends with a cryptic group revealed as the perpetrators of an early incident that is likely a setup for #6.

The narration is outstanding with an excellent range of voices. The tale progresses quickly with multiple stories occurring simultaneously. Corey's talent for grand political intrigue is on display.

I was actually disappointed in Nemesis Games.
I intentionally read Cibola Burn in text because they switched narrators so I was very hopeful when I downloaded Nemesis Games...

Unfortunately, the story wasn't nearly as good as the first three. I really liked the 4 separate stories of the entire crew; you know early on that their story lines will all converge but it was a fun and interesting way to get their. However I just didn't care about what happened to Holden and Naomi, normally my favorite characters behind Avasarala. (C'mon, you have to love her the most!). Holden seems to slowly becoming more and more a sensitive, emotional, wimp and I just hated the Naomi backstory. But I did enjoy getting more Amos.

I really lost the Sci-Fi feel here, the story was all about politics, subterfuge and blah-blah-blah. The setting could have been anywhere, anytime...just another Game of Thrones. Our authors seem to also love constant repetition. In the first book it was the incessant referrals to people's hair floating in Zero-G...here it still the constant referral to various foods manufactured to 'taste something like' the real thing, (fill in whatever food here) because after all, they can't ever get the real thing. How would they know the taste is slightly off if they can never get the real thing!

I still went with a 4 Star overall rating because it is a very fun ride and one of the better series out there. But I will also say I almost took away another because I Hate, Hate, Hate books that end up with a set up for the next in a series. Just end the story and pick it up later in the next book.

The rare SF series that gets better with age.

If you're reading this and you haven't read Nemisis Games, you've already read the first 4 books. Seriously, what are you waiting for?! Stop spoiling the story by reading reviews and just start the best book so far in the series.

Not as good as others in series

I felt this one was cobbled together somewhat haphazardly. Not as enjoyable as the previous four books. I did enjoy getting into the minds of the other members of the Rocinante crew as we knew so little about them before. However, some threads seem “stretched,” especially the one involving Mau. The reader’s performance was excellent, as always.

A miraculous recovery for this series

After Cibola Burn I had given up on this series. Sappy story, awful writing, boring. I wouldn't have touched Nemesis Games without some very positive reviews on Audible but I'm glad I did. I'm half way through and it's become the best SF book I have "read" in a long time (short of The Martian, of course). Great story line, suspense, character development not seen in the Expanse before, witty. I can't explain the difference between the unbearable Cibola Burn and the superb Nemesis Games, but I'm glad "James S.A. Corey" got their groove back, and then some.

Unexpected Greatness

I have loved these two authors through the prior four books. their characters and dialogue and creative imagination is superb. however, I was caught off guard by the absolutes stunning impact of love and acceptance despite fault. be prepared to be blown away by the Holden Nagada relationship.

Continues to Keep it Fresh and Unexpected!

Really enjoyed the new character focuses that we have not had a chance to see before. Plot was as fresh and unexpected as ever.
