  • Pat Flynn, Retired professional footballer, “Why I’m not afraid to say I failed"
    Mar 2 2023

An intriguing chat with former professional footballer Patrick Flynn, who was scouted as a young teen and consequently moved to England with the dream of becoming a first team regular.

Pat first went to Wolverhampton at the age of 16. After 4 years he moved to Torquay United and Kidderminster Harriers before eventually moving home to play League of Ireland football with Shamrock Rovers, St Patrick’s Athletic, Shelbourne and Longford town. Following his retirement he returned to his beloved Rovers as a coach.

Today, Pat has carved out a successful career as a Business Developer for Coca-Cola – but it wasn’t an easy path, considering he left school with no qualifications past Junior Cert and no follow-up education to speak of.

Emer Cleary, Co-Founder of Emu Ink Publishing, with Fintan McCutcheon (former Principal of Balbriggan Educate Together National School and currently associate lecturer and published academic in the field of multicultural education – also an Irish football mega fan!), chat to Patrick, about his experiences, how he felt leaving his home, friends, school and what support he got from the education system as he left and on his return.
