• 09 - The Tapestry of Family in Community - Part 1
    Sep 13 2024

    Episode 9 Show Notes

Today’s guest in the studio is Dr. Renea Butler King, a friend, colleague, and fellow sojourner for equitable systems for the families and children she serves. As we settled into routines for school and work, we wanted to focus on support for families in the community. We know the phrase it takes a village to raise a child, but let’s delve deeper into what the village is composed of. It's a community, of committed and dedicated people who are brave to create spaces for connection, vulnerability, and open and honest dialogue.

    Today’s Episode Overview:

Introduce the theme of the episode: the importance of family in the community, especially for African American families.

Explain that this episode will explore stories, learnings, and joys that come from being supported and acknowledged within our communities.

    Closing Thoughts

    Reflection:

The richness of the tapestry of our lives is comprised of the relationships that nurture and grow us.

The power of reflection on who I am as an individual begins my identity formation. Investing in myself.

What is the tapestry of my life?

  • 06 - Relationships That Support Us
    Jun 21 2024

Welcome to my podcast, I’m Kelly Ramsey CEO of Developing People, Inc. sharing inspiration about life, parenting, living with intention, and sharing stories about how it all happens in the background of life.

In today’s episode Kelly revisits her journey map and shares lessons learned and the impact of the relationships in her life that support her and celebrate her identity.

Our identity is carefully defined by how we show up in relationships with others. Deciding to show up authentically defines the quality of our relationships.

In relationships, consider who we show up as and how we interact with those we treasure most.

Mutual friendships and relationships yield fruit that remains. At the roots, we nourish one another and provide nutrients to cause us to flourish. This nourishment is what we don’t see in the forefront of our lives but it’s what supports healthy relationship development. A celebration of 25 years of marriage is a vivid picture of how we are rooted in love and care for each other. Our tree is producing a harvest because of the constant care and attention to the soil of our lives through the seasons of life.

Let’s keep nurturing our relationships with one another, and see the benefit of our care and attention to each other.

    Today’s Action Steps:

Place a circle around the relationships that you treasure the most. How do you continue to fuel the relationships you circled? Looking at those relationships creates action steps toward the goal you have set for yourself.

  • 05 - Our Relationships: With Ourselves, In Our Family and In Community
    Jun 14 2024

We have a purpose and are knitted together from the beginning of time in our mothers’ womb. The destiny that unfolds is held in the relationships we embark on from childhood to adulthood. Our understanding of who we are as individuals in the context of our families and community shapes us.

    Creating Supportive Relationships

Connecting our Journey of Parenthood to our own childhood

    Relationship development

    Our identity

    In Family and the home

In Community - School, Workplace, and Social settings

    Milestones and Celebrations

    Cultivating Relationships

    Key learnings:

Our identity is connected to our purpose in life.

How we are affected by one another determines how we interact with each other in relationships.

Responsibilities of being in a relationship with one another

Partnership in parenting with our children

Cultivating relationships and actions to affect change.

    Action Steps:

Create a map of your life from childhood to adulthood and identify key moments at each stage. What did you notice about yourself in your map? What were traits that were present in the beginning? If there are changes in your identity from the beginning, what are they?

Make a list of all of your relationships that you are in currently, and those relationships that you are serving others in. Examine your list of relationships to notice any patterns in who supports you, and how you support others. Journal your thoughts, and determine how to cultivate those healthy relationships.
