Acerca de esta escucha

A researcher and consultant burrows deep inside the heads of one modern two-career couple to examine how each partner processes the workday - revealing how a more nuanced understanding of the brain can allow us to better organize, prioritize, recall, and sort our daily lives.

Emily and Paul are the parents of two young children, and professionals with different careers. Emily is the newly promoted vice president of marketing at a large corporation; Paul works from home or from clients' offices as an independent IT consultant. Their days are filled with a bewildering blizzard of emails, phone calls, more emails, meetings, projects, proposals, and plans. Just staying ahead of the storm has become a seemingly insurmountable task.

In Your Brain at Work, Dr. David Rock goes inside Emily and Paul's brains to see how they function as each attempts to sort, prioritize, organize, and act on the vast quantities of information they receive in one typical day. Dr. Rock is an expert on how the brain functions in a work setting. By analyzing what is going on in their heads, he offers solutions Emily and Paul (and all of us) can use to survive and thrive in today's hyperbusy work environment - and still feel energized and accomplished at the end of the day.

In Your Brain at Work, Dr. Rock explores issues such as:

  • why our brains feel so taxed, and how to maximize our mental resources
  • why it's so hard to focus, and how to better manage distractions
  • how to maximize the chance of finding insights to solve seemingly insurmountable problems
  • how to keep your cool in any situation, so that you can make the best decisions possible
  • how to collaborate more effectively with others
  • why providing feedback is so difficult, and how to make it easier
  • how to be more effective at changing other people's behavior
  • and much more...

Real life examples

This book gives you insight on how your brain works in different situations. The author explains a situation that doesn’t go the way you wanted and why. Then explains how the situation could have gone better if you understood how your brain and other’s brains work.

Worth a read

Brain info and connections to natural reactions useful; acting out with "actual" worked was useful, although not always fully believable

Excellent even second time around

I read the original 10 years ago. Now that I am similar age to the main characters and my kids are teens I enjoyed it even more. I even implemented some strategies at work and home.

Smart and Interesting - MUST LISTEN

I’ve had the opportunity to meet him early in his career. I’m familiar with the concepts and have been 100% sold that this model should be taught in schools starting in high school and become main stream and familiar to all. My only struggle and it was only in the beginning is that I’ve heard David speak and he is an excellent speaker. I would have like him to narrate. Not that the narrator was bad at all bye had a very pleasant voice. I’m just familiar with David (certainty) hahah. Once you listen to the book that will make sense!

A new way to think

Paying attention to what I’m actually paying attention to is a new way of thinking that I very much enjoyed learning in this book. The story read well and resonated with things happening in our lives.

Critical book for working professionals

Working professionals who work in a team, who are either individual contributors or team leaders, would benefit from this book. The critical concepts in brain biology and it’s relation to the behavior is been laid out elegantly by the author. He weaves these concepts through a simple yet very powerful storyline. This makes some of the boring neuroscience topics interesting. This book has filtered out hundreds of studies in cutting edge neuroscience and presented them to the general public. He read the papers so that you don’t have to. I have already read critical parts twice and will keep coming back to refresh some concepts.
