You'll finish the book, but will you lose weight?

    (From John Freeman, PhD)
As a doctor myself, I can say that there is some great information in these pages- a lot about fat and the detriment that it's causing in our culture. Some doctors like to suggest cures to symptoms instead of cures for the problem and it appears that these gentleman may be doing just that. The gimmicky (and funny) "waist management" technique is interesting and fairly unique from what I've seen, but it can be seen as just a diversion. Maybe people who are obese need a diversion and need to stop thinking about food, but it's my experience that people need to focus on how they were designed (we were designed to constantly eat) and then cater to that by eating the right types of foods at certain times. Roizen and Mehmet's humorous approach reminds me of one of my favorite diet/nutrition books, "The Evolution Diet," which makes learning about the body entertaining as well as informative. Perhaps the author(s) of the You On a Diet could have focused more on the appropriation of one's diet as Evolution does, but it appears that people can really be helped with these techniques and that's the main goal- a fitter world.

An entertaining way to learn about loosing weight!

This book is a great read with all the images and the "ureka" call outs but to listen to the authors both take turns reading makes it entertaining, enlightening and motivational. I would suggest anyone interested in loosing weight, understanding how food is digested or wanting to listen to a great story definitely purchase this one. Also, join me in purchasing the book and the audio. You won't regret it! It's like going to class with the authors and they are making sure you understand everything!

    You: On a Diet

This is a great book for people that think they are healthy eaters. I learned a lot from it. The tips that they give throughout the book are wonderful. I highly recommend this book to all especially those of us who are STILL trying to shed some pounds.

    Great Book

It's alot easier to follow than most diets. The initial results are not as dramatic as atkins. But the food choices are so much better. Also it's just much healthier for the body. My doctor recommended this one because he says that Atkins is based on fat and that fat is alot harder to burn. To this I think he meant that one has alot less energy. Which I would agree. I've done both and I like this one because it's McDonald's and Pizza Hut friendly :-) I recommend also buying the book because it's got a whole bunch of illustrations. Strenght and distance training is the key.

    I have lost ten lbs.

Drs. Oz and Roizen have a wonderful gift of explaining the complex in layman’s terms, so that we, the common man, can finally understand the benefits of treating our bodies well. The two are also very good at putting “the fear of God” (as we say in the South) in their readers by explaining just exactly what we are doing when watch too much TV and eat lots of cupcake and fries. (Think: Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, as Scrooge lies prostrate on the ground, wailing, promising to mend his wicked ways. It is just that eye-opening.)

All in all, it is a life-changing, challenging book that you should read if you are ready for significant, real change in your life. But be warned: the text is chock-full of medical words, and you find yourself saying, “Now what is leptin again?” So this book may warrant multiple readings for its full benefit. But hey, it’s only four hours and some odd minutes long, so it’s not that bad. Also, if weird narration is a distraction for you, listen up: Dr. Roizen, bless his heart, has a bit of a lisp, which could really get some people sidetracked. He cannot say “L” properly to save his life. But he is an insightful (probably well-off by now) doctor, so I guess he doesn’t care and neither should we. Just letting you know.

And the best thing I can say in favor of this book is that I have been following the guidelines for about two weeks now, and have already lost ten pounds.

    ‘Nuff said. Get the book.

    Good job

Motivational, informative...authors used many metaphors and similies in their descriptive characterization of medical concepts...they communicated in practical terms making the text enjoyable.

Liked the science better than the presentation.

Agreed. Minus one for bad humor.
But too much science? That's up to you to decide but I say no, not quite enough science. If only the claims made for leptin and ghrelin, made early in the book & later qualified, were so flat out simple & true. Then there would already be a magic full pill and a lot of people would be rich and I'd be skinny.

No diet book will ever please everyone. If you want psychology or no nonsense put down your fork talk you won't find much of it here. But I've heard enough of that, so it is refreshing to hear about the science. Most especially, it's great to hear some serious talk about the role of digestion. It's also refreshing to hear the words "satiety" and "satiation" used in place of the word "full". Hooray!

There's some good useful stuff in here. Pity though that they followed it up with a same old, same old diet and exercise regime. Some innovative stuff more centered around the science presented would have been better.
I would have liked less humor and more science. But heck, you know about diet books. They all work for somebody.
Meahwhile though if making peace with food or putting down the fork or hitting the gym works for you, skip this book and go for it. If they ever do find the magic pill it will work just as much on people who haven't mastered the science of neuropeptides.
