About this listen

One wrong move can undercut your message. Believe it or not, our bodies speak louder than our words. Postures, gestures, and expressions convey reams of information - and often not what you'd expect. A smile, for example, is usually considered welcoming. But crook one corner of your mouth higher, and you project superiority, subconsciously chasing other people away. Without Saying a Word explains how even the subtlest motions have meaning.

Distilling decades of research, the book deciphers these unspoken signals: from facial expressions and fleeting micro expressions to positive and negative body language. Discover which postures and gestures indicate confidence and build rapport - and which reveal disinterest, arrogance, or even aggression. Learn to end off-putting habits, accentuate good ones, and become an authentic and effective communicator.

Exhibiting body language that is open, honest, and self-assured increases your social influence and enhances your skill as a negotiator...while the ability to read the emotions and intentions of others is equally indispensable. Whether you're making a presentation, pitching a project, or closing a deal, the right body language can be your best ally.

Study the book, don't listen to the audiobook

There is some very good information in here, but this is NOT a standard business or self-improvement book with a few key principles, elaborated upon and illustrated with memorable stories and examples. No. This is a dense collection of very specific pieces of knowledge, which will fly by if you listen to this. This is more of a textbook than an audiobook. The content can be valuable, but you are likely to get little benefit from listening to it read. I'd advise getting the book or e-book and setting time aside on a regular basis to study a few pages of it at a time.

Excellent book

The narrator does an excellent job with her speech speed, and her clarity. The authors write a very good book, instructional and entertaining. The real world examples from recent events is a big help. I will keep this book as a reference and listen to it again and again

Good but better as a physical book

The content is nothing revelatory but some things could be helpful if you're looking to really dial in your own behaviors and gestures. There's lots of caveats which I don't find to be a huge deal. Humans are complex and these things take practice and context. However, I do agree with the other reviews suggesting this is better if you listen while reading the accompanying pdf or just get the physical version. Some things covered are intuitive and simple but it's a good reminder of all the things you likely do without noticing.

The political complaints I've seen some reviewers post seem strange. If you believe Trump can do no wrong then maybe this would offend you but she talks about how bad both Clinton's gestures and style were and how they had to work on it to not look robotic or boisterous. The only real critique of Trump is his hand shaking style which is objectively aggressive. I would imagine he would agree that was his intent in some situations. She does mention Obama's debate style and some expressions and gestures he uses but they're common demonstrations and he too was a president. I don't think using presidents and presidential candidates as a point of reference is a political slant, it's just an easy figure to use since the American president, regardless of who it is, can be identified globally.

Pedantic and limited.

We all know that body language tells a lot. That’s why we need to be more careful in writing an  email than in speaking face to face. But, many times we don’t notice what particular gesture or what slight twitch is giving us a warning about someone, we just know we feel uncertain. And, many of us don’t notice anything but the most obvious signs. This book can help. On the other side, many times we don’t realize that some natural actions that we make may be giving away signals that we don’t want. We are not aware of that upturned eyebrow, or the rubbing of hands, or whatever. This book may help, but also has a lot of weaknesses. The most obvious is that it completely ignores those one the autistic spectrum. It could be that the person who has trouble maintaining eye contact is not trying to hide anything, but is just typical of those on the spectrum who normally have trouble making or keeping eye contact. However, the book is crippled by its writing style. It often sounds more like a list than a book. With that, it makes it hard to like and easy to miss what help there is in the book.

Very insightful however it was a bit boring

I learbed alot from reading this book. It rrallt appreciated the insight that I gpt about decoding body language. However, it was not the easiest book to learn to because it was technical and didn't have any stories or funny analogies to picque my imagination. It was well written. . . and I feel that the next edition would do quite well with some stories to keep readers engaged and better relate to the information
