About this listen

The New York Times best-selling story of a friendship frozen between life and death.

Lia and Cassie are best friends, wintergirls frozen in fragile bodies, competitors in a deadly contest to see who can be the thinnest. But then Cassie suffers the ultimate loss - her life - and Lia is left behind, haunted by her friend's memory and racked with guilt for not being able to help save her.

In her most powerfully moving novel since Speak, award-winning author Laurie Halse Anderson explores Lia's struggle, her painful path to recovery, and her desperate attempts to hold on to the most important thing of all: hope.

Having a child with anorexia is so very hard. This really gave me insight into my daughter’s mind. Thank you for writing it.

Insightful

I felt like the writing was quite repetitive. It is a good book for anyone struggling with eating disorders and mental disorders in general, especially teenagers that are going through it. I think so often that teenagers are dismissed in what they are dealing with mentally, but this book does a really good job at showing what it is for both viewpoints.

A poem in book form. The story is captivating. The flow and word choice are peak Laurie H.A. I have no words. Cried several times.

Sad. Beautiful. Haunting.

It was definitely emotional, almost too much
She makes it

I found it relatable in different ways I felt so much compassion for her… maybe I deserve that too

I just liked it

There's too much metaphor on the story line. The fantasy confuses the storyline into a kind of parallel story. Overall decent book but wouldn't recommend it to someone with low attention span.

Triggering fantasy

This book is amazing and powerful. Very triggering for someone with an eating disorder but somehow I doubt my saying this will stop anyone since I listened specifically to trigger myself. Maybe I’ll recover too, eventually...

Amazing book!

Good story about two teens with eating disorders. Phoebe Strole is excellent with the different characters.

I really liked the readers voice and inflections. I think it made the book a better read, honestly! I liked the story, and the raw thoughts the author incorporated. I’m in my later 20s and related to this teen’s struggles. Thanks for the good read!

What a very beautiful, yet sad way to explore one teenager's struggle with an eating disorder, cutting and mental illness. Written like poetry. This book was one I didn't want to put down, you are able to see this amazing work play out in your minds eye. Those are the absolute best kinds of books. I loved the poetic way this book was written. Bringing to light the seriousness of some of the struggles teens face. It also shows how there is hope, help & love. I highly recommend this book. I will definitely be listening to it again!
