About this listen

From the author of the bestselling Tahoe Mystery series...

UCLA Medieval History Professor Josie Strong is one of the few Black women professors nationwide. She has succeeded very well in a challenging career. It remains to be seen if she can succeed as a single mother raising her 14-year-old daughter Samantha.

In hopes of deepening their mother-daughter bond, Josie plans a wilderness vacation out of cell phone range where they can have shared time and not be distracted by the internet.

However, Josie and Samantha don't realize they have witnessed a crime. As a result, powerful men want them dead.

A killer intends to follow Josie and Samantha into the wilderness and leave their bodies in the forest. But what the assassin doesn't know is that Professor Strong is an expert in the construction of medieval weapons. Josie can go into the dark forest and find materials to make a deadly weapon. The out-of-shape professor can become a warrior.

Good luck, Mr. Assassin. You may have met your match...

Intriguing story

As always, Todd tells a very interesting, intriguing, and well researched story. Personally, I don't care for the virtual narrator. This was my first experience and it seemed choppy, was distracting from the story, and gave me a headache. But I'm sensitive that way. if I hadn't literally read all his other books and knew it had to be great also, i probably wouldn't have stuck through it. That would've been a shame because it was a really good writing on many levels. The characters and medieval history added interest and opened the story to various audiences, demonstrating the abilities and adaptability people can use in life and death situations, especially when a child's survival is at stake. It also revealed a teacher's motivation and interactions with students. The unique, but familiar settings were intriguing and educational. "Unknown" added the love and depth of relationships between dogs and humans. The mystery is skillfully woven to pull the various elements together into another exceptional revelation of life.

No More AI for me

No more AI

the narration took all the emotional guts out of this book, and I couldn't finish it. I like Borg novels and so I was surprised that it seemed so bad.

AI Voice make it Not Worth Listening

The story is fine. Unfortunately the AI voice does not do proper inflections and mispronounces some words. Better to read it on your own than to listen to this voice.
